Christmas starts this weekend in Evansville

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Thursday, November 18, 2010 - 11:31 a.m.

Usually I’m pretty insistent that Christmas can’t start until Thanksgiving is over with. The music, the decorations and all the hype should wait until we get one holiday out of the way.

But this year, finally with my own house to decorate rather than a small apartment, I really can’t wait. The box of Christmas decorations just might get brought up from the basement tonight.

And what better way to get into the holiday season than the movie-turned-play, “A Christmas Story.” Check out the front page of our kicks section today for photos and a story about Evansville Community Theatre’s production of Jean Shepherd’s “A Christmas Story.”

The movie basically is a classic in my book. And I’m sure seeing it play out on stage would be even more fun. The play is at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday.

Downtown also has a lot going on this weekend with the annual Olde Fashioned Christmas and arrival of Santa. The event features free horse-drawn carriage rides Friday night, open houses, live music and plenty of treats. All the details are here.

If it were up to me, the Christmas season would start on 12/25 and end on 1/5. Decorations would go up on Christmas Eve and come down on 1/6. Twelve days. Wouldn't that be great?
