I'm No Macho Man

By STEVE KNOX   Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 7:56 p.m.

A manly scream – Are you ready for some football? – then head to our man caves with the big screens, we high-five , chest pound and give “testosteroney” grunts. Life is scheduled around football in the fall, right guys? Watching Packers and Badgers football was a ritual for me growing up. I couldn’t play to save my soul but I was a fan and lived the man stereotype. I lived and breathed football!

OK guys this is where you may want to turn away for a moment, and possibly grab your empty pretzel bowl before returning to the screen just in case. I haven’t watched a full football game since 2003. That’s right, I’ve let the man nation down. The only reason I watched the game in 2003 is because my rear end was in the stadium. Sickening, isn’t it? I’m such a girl.

In the last three years I’ve watched no more than 60 minutes of football. I normally have to ask my wife who won. A few positives to the lack of grunts and chest bumps have been a decrease in blood pressure during football season and enjoying our city of parks.

While the Badgers were whoopin’ up on the Wolverines on Saturday I was playing “monster” at Peace Park with the kids. We took a quick stop for root beer and a second-wind finish at Palmer Park. I was kind of busy. For the records, there were a few other guys at the park with their family too. I hope coach Beilema or Mr. Alverez weren’t upset that I didn’t notice their game.

So guys, if you’re looking for someone to fill out your fantasy football league, I’m not you’re guy. You’d be better off asking any girl. She has probably watched more football than me. ☺

I think Beth bought some Girl Scout cookies and gave them away at work. Everyone there apparently likes Beth for her generosity. Can't blame them.

Naw, you're more like Charlie Evans from Star Trek.

I guess I'm like steve. When I was younger I lived football. I played YMCA to high school. Started fantasy leagues and would not think of missing any game. Got the stupid stock share for the Packers. Have a peice of Camp Randall turf. We have season tickets to the Badger. I would do have to listen to the pregame show, goto the game, post game show and watch the game again on PBS at night.

Now, I still love football but its just not that big of a part of my life. We still have our Badger tickets but lucky if we make it to 3 game a year. And even then I think of all the other things I should be doing. I might catch a half of a Packers game if I am not at work. I guess one day I figured out whether or not millionaires win or loss at a game I still have to goto work the next day. I still enjoy it but I guess the older I get I feal there are more meaningful things to do with my time.

Cut the guy some slack. I'd never admit I don't watch football...especially in a public forum. He just needs a Lambeau leap.

I have to agree. This is kind of a silly blog. However, I am so.... glad that the Beloit vs. Janesville one has been taken off. I commented on it, and read most of the comments, but after awhile, seriously, it was like an accident, you didn't want to look, but did anyway. Samething over and over. I did enjoy your "passing on the right" and agreed with many of the comments. However, I am not loving this one, but I get your point. Once you have kids, your priorities change.

I know you, Steve, and you are a nice guy. But, this blog is silly. Really?
.
I also found it to be bordering on sexist to say "ask a girl." As my name indicates, I am of the female variety. I play fantasy football and can hold my own against the macho man variety when it comes to talking football!

Ps...prevention...go browns? Go where? They looked tough at the start of the season but..... Now that other Ohio team...they busted on to the scene this season from nowhere! Must be Ocho's name change!

Steve, whoever coerced you into writing that story should be in charge of torturing the prisoners at Gitmo.

Thank you! I bet your kids enjoyed the parks much more than watching you watch football as you were completely and utterly bored... or just sleeping through it.

I love football. I have my favorite team... not the Vikings, not the Bears, and DEFINITELY NOT THE PACKERS!! But, I do have to say it's more fun watching the kids play.

GO BROWNS!
