When Ken Scott wasn’t Red Hot
Red Hot Ken Scott? Since I don’t listen to country or western my only knowledge of Red Hot is through the WJVL blog site. Or is it? Wasn’t Red Hot just plain old Ken Scott on WCLO in the early 1990’s? I think he was that guy. The same guy who gave me a WCLO Breakfast Club mug on my way to U-Dub Dub at Hardee’s one morning. Wow, come to think of it, I remember many regional radio personalities growing up in Janesville.
My first recollection of a morning show was JD Barber and Ralphie Boy on Z-104. As I grew and my musical taste changed I turned to Sly in the Morning on 101.5 and his “social dilemma” -- A talk show/music mix. There was Jeff Wicker, Johnny Danger (Z-104 version), Steve Shannon (94.1 The Fox) and many others.
Now my radio is mainly tuned to AM. Music comes from the computer and ipod so I’m not that familiar with today’s FM morning shows.
I distinctly remember summer vacations in elementary school and hearing Bob Dailey on “Talk of the Town” on WCLO at my grandparents. The more things change the more they stay the same. Bob Dailey is still a part of my morning routine.
Who are the radio personalities you remember? Who gets you through the day today?

I normally only listen to the radio while driving and pretty much just listen to WGN 720AM, unless they are covering a sports game. I grew up listening to Wally Phillips and Roy Leonard on WGN's morning show riding to school in the morning. Part of my Dad's family was from Evanston, so he normally listened to the Chicago stations. In later years I enjoyed Uncle Bobby (Bob Collins), and Spike O'Dell, who took over his morning show after Mr. Collins tragic death in a plane crash. I like Milt Rosenberg's "Extension 720" evening program.
I currently listen to Steve Cochran, Dean Richards and Garry Meier on WGN. I used to catch Garry on WLS when he was with Roe Conn. My car radio stopped picking up WLS clear enough to listen to about the time Garry was off the air due to a contract dispute with WLS.
I grew up listening to Paul Harvey when I'd visit my grandparents out on their farm, back in the late 60's and early 70's. Grandpa would come in from the field for lunch in time to wash up and sit down to the kitchen table and eat while listening to Mr. Harvey. Talking was not permitted until the broadcast was over.

Hey Nina, I remember Uncle Larry and Little Tommy. We used to listen to them on our way to school every morning when all we had was AM radio in our car. I also remember animal stories. You can buy the CDs. I don't remember what the website was that I bought it from but it was only a couple of years ago when I got one for my dad. It was great bonding time.

Remember WLS on - I think it was - 890 AM? There was a morning show with Ol' Uncle Lair and Little Snotnose Tommy. They had a segment with bizarre animal stories that I used to love. In fact, I remember buying the record of Animal Stories (Best of...) for my dad for Christmas one year!

twerp: I totally agree! Mike puts a smile on my face and leaves me laughing on a daily basis. I love the songs that he records his daughter singing. Favorite: "The Coffee Song". My 7 and 5 year old children love the "Short-sleeve Steve" songs. :)
