Dirty Laundry
With a little help from Don Henley, I ask the question: What is it with negative news? My take is the Gazette online community thrives on it. It’s weird. For those wondering, I do not work for the Gazette and am definitely not a journalist. I’m just a blogger.
I make my living off the evening news Just give me something, something I can use People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry
Some people just aren’t satisfied. They need to find something to bash about. Guess what, some people actually like it in this city. Deal with it!
Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry
Whether they read the news or read the blogs, some anonymous comments are just rude, crude and unjustified. Go play in another sandbox.
We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5 She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry
Why do online news posts on local deaths sometime end up having comments suspended? Celebrate the life.
Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet? You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry
We can jump up and down and scream about this political party or that political party but only a small portion of the population actually votes.
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around
We have to remember our past, but we MUST look to the future. If you’re not going to participate get out of the way and start watching daytime Soap Opera’s. Live in a fantasy world. It will be more productive than anonymously barking at a city councilperson or other community members who are actually trying to make a difference.
Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry
Pick up a copy of the Gazette. There are a ton of great, positive stories. It’s a super break from the Dirty Laundry. Thanks to the real journalists who make my daily reading of The Janesville Gazette interesting and informative. I’m just a blogger.

I have often contemplated the tired old saying,"No news, is good news" what does that really mean? Is it that news by it's very nature is bad? If that is the case is that further saying that the lack of any news is a good thing? Rather a negative world view me thinks. Not all news is bad, but sadly car wrecks and fires make for a better front page, read as Paper selling pictures, than smiling babies.......... as to your other point, Trolls, about a year ago friend of mine was killed in a car crash. My first stop once I got the news was here, I read the dry one paragraph stating of the facts, and then scrolled down to the comments, the Trolls were out in force that night, they had strapped on their Internet Tuff Guy capes and were ripping my friend.....it sickened me, they weren't there, they didn't know him, yet they felt secure behind their screens, cowards every last one, where do they come from? What joy can be gleened, I guess that can only be known to their tortured twisted psyches, until you have real answers, or can be of a help, get back under your bridge! Dave Loveland

I enjoy your blogs, but you are right, many of the comments are rude, however, they do create discussions good or bad, off topic and on. No matter where you go in the world, there is always going to be someone who has to stir the "pot" or create controversity-just because. That isn't unique to Janesville or this blog.

Since I mentioned the city council I thought I'd just give a quick update -- council just approved Sneakers Bar and Grill with volleyball 4-2. It was good to hear both sides. Baby steps.

Janesville has had a lot of negative news in the past year and a half. To artificially create positive news in a landscape rife with problems does not serve the public good. Nevertheless, to complain endlessly without offering solutions is pointless too. If news is spun too positively people will overlook major problems in society, like war and hate, unemployment, and people dying because of lack of sufficient health care. Sometimes, the positive story does not carry with it the full truth, this can also be said for the negative. For every winner there is a loser. These measures of the news, Positive or Negative, are also quite subjective. A better measure of news is whether it is true or false. Many conservatives I know find it quite positive that Republicans and some Democrats have taken stances against a Public Health plan, many Democrats I know find it quite negative. However, is it true that we have the best health care in the world? Is it correct that the Democrats have all the answers about how to fix health care? The truth of any story is that it has positive and negative aspects. Good news reporting shouldn't simply affirm sensibilities, it should cause you to question them. Enforcing either a positive or negative agenda on news serves no one.

What's amusing is all the non-computer savvy people who comment and think they are anonymous on the internet. Get a clue folks. Your comment can be traced to an IP address (your computer). At that point, libel/slander suits are possible. If you really want to be anonymous, you have to take precautions and know how the internet works. As far as negative comments go, I don't mind. If we don't like what the city council is doing for example, freedom of speech rules. And maybe some of them read the comments.

Life isn't fair. The news agencies don't control what happens in reality, they just control what reality they decide to report on. Life is full of bad and good. If you ignore the bad, it will eventually grow and dominate. Just remember, in order to get clean laundry, it had to be dirty at one time.

When you add the good natured humor that takes place on the blogs, the blogs are no more negative than the content of all media.
Life is drama. Drama is conflict. Conversation is the relatively non-physical way of expressing the drama. Theater is the art form of the spoken word. Theater is called drama. The blogs are drama.
