A different nameplate in my driveway?

By STEVE KNOX   Friday, January 8, 2010 - 5:07 a.m.

I have a slight itch for a new vehicle. My 12 year-old Saturn is a trooper but it might be time. For me and many others in my generation in Janesville the only vehicles we’d consider were GM vehicles. The reasons were obvious. GM supported our families and the discounts were substantial. Other than a short stint in a Ford Taurus station wagon (wasn't ready for a minivan), I’ve owned nothing but GM vehicles.

The itch for a different vehicle started a few weeks ago. The initial impulse to gravitate toward a GM vehicle wasn’t there. An odd feeling. I’m considering looking elsewhere. I’m even considering driving through the Toyota and Honda lots - something I’ve never done before.

It’s not that I don’t have city and family loyalty. While the plant may be idle there are still thousands of General Motors pension checks deposited each month in this city. That is a definite consideration. I also own the company. Well, we all do.

Buying a car was usually an easy process. As much as I disliked it, it was fairly easy because I knew what I was going to buy - GM. That’s not a guarantee this time and that is a tad bothersome.  I’m going to do my research, test drive all models and let the best vehicle and deal win. It’s the American way.

So, what about other Janesville residents with family ties - will you still look at a GM vehicle as a first and only choice?

Buy a car from an American company that didn't steal bailout money from the citizens then send it to Canada and Mexico.

Fortunately, I do not have to resort to name-calling to get my point across. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Loyalty? Loyalty? Where was GM's loyalty when it closed the Janesville Plant? I own all GM vehicles, but when and if I buy another, the last thing that I will consider will be loyalty to GM.

Steve - I know what you are trying to do. You are trying to justify buying something else other then a GM product. That same company that put cloths on your back, and food on your table, and is the pension of your father. You should be ashamed. You feel bad and want reassurance from others you are doing the right thing. There just isn't any loyalty anymore.

I'm on my fourth Camry. Prior to that I drove Oldsmobile. I would haved liked to drive a GM vehicle but couldn't find one that matched the quality or mileage of the Toyota.

I have family that worked there, not myself. I just bought a new Chevy Silverado, it's the best one yet, the last one being an 05. Features, quality, performance, it has it all. And they are having some good deals.

Ford also makes good vehicles.

I personally don't see how anyone can support the people and companies who were behind the likes of this; http://www.ww2pacific.com/atrocity.html

What kind of vehicle are you considering? GM builds some models in the US. Toyota and Honda do too, though not all models. Check the bottom of the window sticker to find out where it was built. Car shopping and test driving can be so much fun! That is, until you have to pay for it.

Buy a Yugo. Its alot like a bike. Less expensive/ no overhead, nor leg room for that matter.
Okay Okay, Just kidding.
Just to lite on the pension deal and ownership of company; Your thinking economics. True if all of a sudden, from out of nowhere, people choose to buy from GM, whatever would the government do if it GM paid-up sooner and they lost all their interest? If this oversight on repay was identified as a mass purchase-based buy-out? What then? Would they start a new tax on the purchases midterm to compensate for lost funds? Would the states, counties begin to weigh out the school & property taxes for lost funding from the Feds? Would a dominoe effect take hold that Toyota, Honda, and all the Asian brands have enjoied; hence then watch them fall to pieces without a demmand for their product(s)? Would Steve desire the entire out-of-country sales markets to crash insted of prosper?
The point is, would a sudden "everyday man" economic boosting surge in American Made products freak-out those Doomsday sayers, and mess this recovery up for their personal gains? By actually forcing the recovery. Not allowing negative numbers. Putting their money where their preverbial-downtrodden mouths are.
Nah, go by a KIA. I hear their great for all the rite reasons. Test drive a Mini. Go Green! No matter the trade in value, you will be makeing payments. Wanna try this suggestion? Keep driving the Saturn until it runs you into the ground. Until then SAVE the Monthly-$ towards a down payment-or...Pay off the auto of choice in full.
I am a ex-GMer. I know and can appreciate what your testimony is here. Actually Steve, it is all true. If the common then ways never turned into what it is now? I believe everyone would have been better off now.
But, since we all have changed, buy a Winner. Support Nafta-Cafta. Make Asia rich.

We just bought a Honda and the other choice was a model from GM and one from Ford. The Ford that was comparable was too small (sport trac) the GM was a little bigger and carried abut a $20K premium to the Honda that we felt would do everything we wanted. The Honda was built in Neb. while the Chevy was built in Mexico.

When the UAW goes under I may buy another GM. I did NOT see any of the UAW fat cats loose thier jobs but Government Motors fired thier CEO and I agree that management needed to go however the UAW was as much to blame.

The ONLY GM car I would consider buying is a Corvette. Built in KY although by UAW but it is a great car.

I dont have a problem with the employees of GM that are UAW but I have a problem with the UAW. They are a parasite that killing off the host. Once the host dies, the parasite will die with it.

Newswacko: we had a Fusion as a rental car back in October. If I were to buy a non-GM car...it would be a Fusion. Looks nice, drives nice, handles well, interior was comfortable. I was impressed: and I would never have bought a Ford prior! (I inherited a Ford Expedition when I married my husband though....and that thing is a beast!)

Zoom.... If you had done a little more google research, you would have learned that the Camaro had been built in Canada since 1993. Many of the US's icons are not made/manufactured/assembled in the US (think outside of the box and beyond just cars). You also would have learned that this plant in Canada was slated to be closed (announcement came same day as the announcement of Janesville's demise). OKC was also in the running to build these SWEET cars! Of course (I'd) rather have American jobs but hey, a UAW job is a UAW job.

I don't fault GM for building elsewhere. They are a business. If our government can't attract and retain business then that burden lies on their shoulders: not on the business's!!

I have always believed (first hand experience) that the quality from Honda and Toyota were better than the US automakers due primarily to attention to detail in design. My opinion has changed 180 degrees on Ford. The steps they have taken to turn their business around starting with quality but also focusing on making sure they take care of their customers has changed my mind. I am looking to replace my trusty Saturn and it is likely that will be a Ford.

After much consideration and feelings of guilt, I bought a Honda this year. We have many family members who have worked and GM and it was a difficult decision to make. We have also had bad experiences with our last Chevy and Fagan so decided to try a Honda. I had always heard wonderful things about Hondas. We love ours! I felt the same as the other post... Hondas, I believe are assembled in Alabama so I didn't feel as apprehensive in buying one.

...and the Camaro is made in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. It's a shame GM couldn't build such an iconic model like the Camaro in the U.S.

DO NOT buy a car from a defunct brand...Pontiac, Saturn, Saab, any Chrysler. While the Pontiac G8 was a nice car, there weren't very many made, and they are imported from Holden in Australia. Parts costs in the future will be expensive.

A car MANUFACTURED in the U.S. contributes much more to the economy and U.S. jobs than a car DESIGNED here but manufactured in mexico, canada, or anywhere else. Buying Ford, GM or Chrysler no longer ensures that your car is produced in the U.S. Many best-selling transplant vehicles made in the U.S. use more U.S. parts than "domestic" vehicles produced in Mexico or Canada. Good luck figuring out what "buy American" truely means.
