Routine

By STEVE KNOX   Monday, July 26, 2010 - 6:23 a.m.

I was planning on one blog on my recent “life change” but I received several emails asking me to continue for a few more days. I will. Unfortunately, too many people in and around Janesville are in my same situation. Things will get better. In the meantime, I need to keep a routine.

When I was given the news to pack my bags, my initial internal comment was, “At least they did it in July instead of January.” Yes, I've been hard at work at finding work but I've also stopped to smell the roses. I would have never been able to visit the Edgerton and Fort Atkinson pools with my kids on a sunny Wednesday or Thursday afternoon if I didn't have the extended time. Mid-morning trips to Peace Park have been enjoyable too.

I'm a few weeks into this adventure. While I've always dreamed of living a summer like a teacher, I'm starting to grow a tad tired of my new structure...or lack of it. Oh, don't get me wrong, I still love taking the kids to the park or for a bike ride during a weekday morning but my internal clock radio is saying it's time to get back to a work routine.

I do have my standard routine. I'm still up around the same time and bedtime is roughly the same too. Instead of getting ready and heading out the door to work I remove my laptop from the case and work...on finding work. I am using social media, meta tagging certain keywords in my resume and other professional blog and have taken several webinar workshops through the outplacement company my former employer offered as assistance.

I've also put more time and effort into my volunteer work. I have taken my duty as a BHCCU Director very seriously since taking the position in May 2009. Now I'm reaching out to gather additional information on how to become a more effective Director. Free webinars through Credit Union Leagues and other organizations are helping me become a well-rounded Director.

I'm finding a new routine. A routine that I am perfectly fine with stopping in a few weeks. Meanwhile, the search continues.

What's your routine?

I read today that the average time out of work has reached 35 weeks. It may be January by the time you get back to work. Good luck, Steve. For Janesville's sake I hope you find a job in town. If you do end up having to leave, and as a former Janesville resident, I think a blog by a former resident who cares about the place might be interesting.

There are a few blogs where i feel I get better information than the articles from the paper the blogs are in, yours is one of them. I appreciate your insights, accuracy, and research on many of the blogs you post. Maybe the gazette can step up to the plate here....

Come on Dan White or Scott Angus, do something good here. This guy IS janesville. Make room and keep him in Janesville. I am sure no one else will love Janesville more. He can report as well if not more interesingly then a couple on your current reporting staff...
