US Farm Report - I'm praying for rain
I was up early on Saturday morning, flipping channels prior to bolting up to Madison for a training ride. Infomercial after infomercial consumed my 20 channelsI before stumbled upon the US Farm Report. The show was like a horror flick. Unfortunately, there was nothing science fiction about this show. It was real…and really scary.
The show focused on the Texas drought. In a nutshell Texas is dealing with a drought that hasn't been seen in generations. Non-irrigated cotton fields are being plowed under, water holding ponds are bone dry and even the tropical storm that was supposed to make an impact last week dried up as it hit land.
Farmers no longer have feed for their livestock so they're selling cattle for cash right now. In the short term that's great for the consumer since beef prices will fall in the weeks and months ahead. The lack of cattle in late 2011 and into 2012 will only mean higher prices for everything in the long-term.
Back to the cotton for a moment. The report mentioned that Texas grows 75 percent of the domestic cotton. Take a look at what you're wearing. Is there cotton on the label? Even that poly blend is a blend of cotton. Farmers will sell what they can salvage at market in the fall. The global market will suck that up and return the cotton in the form of higher priced clothes. Those same clothes that are already higher priced this year due to a poor 2010 crop.
Oh, praying is in the title of my blog. Why pray? Well, I sat in service last winter and Pastor talked about the power of prayer. Prior to the technological advances in farming, movement of water and pinpoint weather forecasts - farmers prayed for their crops and for favorable weather. Their congregations prayed. Today? Not so much. We rely on all those advances to make sure we have food on our tables and clothes on our back. We don't rely on God. Sure, our country has gone through drought before and the power of prayer may not have solved every issue. It's not supposed too. Maybe it's not God's will.
As the ground continues to crack in Texas and our crops in the southern Wisconsin area start to turn tired and wilted, I'm turning to prayer. I am going to add the farmers into my prayers. Prayers that already include wisdom and guidance to our elected officials here in Wisconsin and in Washington. Right now, I think it's important to pray for rain.
Is prayer important in your life? If so, will you add the farmers to your prayers?

If no one prayed for rain - would it never rain there again?
Would a rain dance help as much as prayers to Jesus?

Iriss - what type of christian are you? Will I be tortured forever by your worship wanting sky god?
When you are in heaven - will you know that most of the earth's population is buring in hell for your god's glory as He intended?

Prayer works for those who need to believe that there is a higher power somewhere. Its gonna rain again, you can count on it.

I can most confidently assure you that it will rain.
I can guarantee it.
No prayers necessary.
But, if you should pray for rain and it rains,
that must be what did it.

As you can see from some of the comments below, a lot of people don't think much of prayer, Steve. But they certainly do seem to like to display their self-righteousness. These sanctimonious folks really need our prayers too since hardened hearts are terminal to the soul. Isn't it funny that the atheists claim the golden rule as their own, evolved over the ages just like their bodies (they think). Yet they show so little understanding of that rule, as if it were written in some foreign language. (That is, they seem dumbfounded by the golden rule concerning their own behavior, but they have a keen understanding of it when a Christian fails to uphold it.) They demand respect for their sincerely held beliefs and philosophy(atheism and evolution), but they insist on showing disrespect to people who hold a sincere belief in God. That seems to me to be prima facie evidence that they are mistaken about the source of the golden rule just as they are mistaken about a great many things. The efficacy of prayer is just another subject they are mistaken about.

Oh yeah back to praying. I have a hard time believing the "God will provide"
Are all those who are unemployed NOT praying??
God cannot pay the mortgage of all those forclosures. I belive in God but have a bit of disbelief here. Sorry. The money does say in God we trust but it comes from the bank not from the shy or a money tree.
If I gave my unemployment check to the chruch how would I pay the rent? I suppose some churches let you sleep there at night when it is really cold!

I watered tomatoes at 7 am yesterday. They are in containers. At 5 pm I was wondering if I forgot to water them at all. Was going to skip it this AM until I got home from work this PM but knew that wouldn't work.
We had some good rain but need more of that weekly. As far as containers go you only get that day off of watering if you get a good rain but it makes the ground stuff look like it isn't dead.
This hunid junk can hit the road anyday a swell. YUCK.

I wonder when people will stop relying on a god to 'fix' or do things for them? Someday people will realize that they need to be responsible for themselves. It's a strange concept, try it once.

'There is no hope without Him'
funny. like most, ive had some lows in my life. i hoped they would get better but i KNEW there was only one person that could improve it. me. i have a great life and ive never once prayed to anything, real or non. i wont discount that prayer helps some people get thru certain things, but to say there is no hope without him is silly. to each their own.

Does it matter if it does anything outside their head? Reality is all in your head anyway.

Steve, when your god does not answer your prayers it does not mean that your request was not in line with His divine will. It means that your god does not actually exist.
The governor of that state is also relying on prayer, his time could be better spent dealing with the crisis rather than thinking/wishing as hard as he can hoping it will change reality.
Pray for a sick child to get better and it does - god's will, pray for a sick child and it dies miserably and god was calling it home. In reality - prayer to an imaginary sky god does nothing outside of the head of the person praying.

Every Christian on earth knows that prayer is answered by our Lord. There is no hope without Him. Keep on praying, Steve, especially for those who don't know Him.
