Debit or credit?
Most of my friends will vouch that I rarely carry cash. I don't carry cash because it's easier to track my expenses with my debit and credit card. Yes, there is a cost for businesses to swipe my cards but most retailers and convenience stores don't have a problem taking my money. I've seen businesses with a minimum charge posted and I appreciate them letting me know. There is only one business who's turned me away when I wanted to make a $1 purchase. No problem, I just went next door.
So, you've swiped your card. Do you choose debit or credit? I always choose credit. I choose credit for one reason - my financial institution receives the interchange fees associated with a credit purchase. I know Clark Howard had a big beef with debit cards in the early 2000s because of the lack of protection. I agreed with him and resisted for years. He's since softened his position and I went with a debit card last year.
Since I went with the debit card my cash withdrawals have decreased and my expense tracking has really been honed. I'm anal with my budget and expense tracking. I'm just waiting for an app to allow a transaction to take place as I wave my phone then have it directly entered into my iBank software.
I use my credit card for major purchases and online buys. I still do that for protection. My goal is to pay no interest and I've been successful for over 15 years. Credit card companies love to hate me.
I live in a plastic world. Between Paypal, debit and credit cards, and mobile apps for my phone the only time I need cash is when I want to enjoy something at Frostie Freeze or head to the Farmer's Market.
Are you a debit or credit person? Do you still carry cash?

No credit cards.
I use my debit
as credit.
Otherwise I use cash!
Checks only when I mail
a payment. Why use checks
at stores that electronically
take your money??!!
That's a waste of paper!

I dont understand why a credit card place would pay you to use a card, and pay more money out to you than they make off you. ?? What is their purpose of that?
Not everybody pays it off monthly. Remember they are also getting 4% from the merchant!!

It's interesting that you brought this up because some of the largest banks, such as Bank of America, will be charging a monthly fee for debit card use. M&I restructured their checking accounts and I got popped for $34 in fees that first month between the monthly checking account fee and debit card use fees. I closed my account there and moved to Blackhawk Community Credit Union. As banks try to get more profits from the consumers, I think we will eventually start moving back to a cash based society.

I use debit at Woodmans. Cash wherever they accept neither. Credit everywhere else. Gotta love those cashback rewards!

My bank has almost from the very beginning protected debit cards to a maximum $50 liability, so I prefer using it as debit as it goes against my account immediately. I usually check my account at least once a day. I encountered one instance many years ago where each transaction on a particular day got double-charged against my account. I noticed it right away and called the bank and they immediately rectified and credited my account back. If I had used credit it may have taken a week or so for the charges to even hit the bank and they would have been a little more difficult to track.

I have a paypal debit card and pin with the credit card logo on it that is connected to my checking. (as well as my bank's card that is connected to my checking, of course, but I always use the paypal one as they pay me back between 5 and 10 dollars cash per month just to use it!) only place I need cash is the community drop off center, Mocha Moment, and the farmer's market! I don't keep any actual real credit cards anymore. only use my checking account.

I heard somewhere that it is illegal for stores to have a minimum amount to charge. I think you can actually report the store. Not sure to who or even where I heard that. Like Steve, I just go to stores that don't have a minimum.

I never carry cash either. I am a debit girl all the way, easy to track and budget, and makes me accountable to myself for what I spend. If the kids need money at school, I have linked to their checking acount and just transfer some from mine to theirs - easy peasy.

@cruiser: Some people, like myself, don't carry cash because it requires a trip to an ATM, preferably at my bank where I won't incur a $3-$5 fee. Considering I live blocks away from the neighborhood gas station and a few miles from the closest branch of my bank, you do the math. Debit cards are quick, easy and portable. Buying "small" items, as you say, has nothing to do with having cash. Dolt.

I never use cash - haven't for years. I don't use checks either. I use my debit card for most things, and charge for large things. My credit card company gives me an extra 2 years warranty on large purchases so that is a no-brained. Just pay entire balance monthly. I use Microsoft Money software to connect to my bank every other day and retrieve purchases made. That software then creates profit/loss statements and pie charts showing where every penny I spend goes to. My goal is to spend way less than I make monthly, and this all keeps me on track and building my savings.

CASH ONLY, except to pay bills in mail w/check. I just don't understand people using credit cards or debit when they are buying a couple small items, like candy or bag of chips, if they don't have cash for these very SMALL items they shouldn't be buying them.

Fortunately, I'm not overly paranoid like MBHammer. I use debit all the time and if there are people in line behind me, I think they can wait the extra 10 seconds it takes me to enter my pin and approve the transaction. Realistically, it's quicker that way compared to a clerk doling out 92 cents of change.

I use cash and debit card, I use cash when there is a line of people behind me as to not hold anybody up and debit when I am the only one in line. I like to always carry cash because you never know when you might need it for a purchase where they except only cash.

I have some cash for places that don't accept cash. I charge everything I can for the 1-5 points per dollar. Cannot charge water bill or Alliant yet. Do phone and cable.
Steve if you choose debit and plug in a pin they get charged a bit less fee. I don't have a debit card linked to checking. Not so quick to resolve your issues from your checking account. No thanks.
klc- it is fun to keep that much cash at home but not smart. If you get robbed and it is possible homeowners/renters ins only covers about $200 cash. My home was broken into once and I saved charge- a lot. I bet is was over $300 most was covered thankfully.
Sigma why not earn free money on your purchases? It pays more than the interest rate in a bank!!

I feel forced to use credit or debit at the gas station because I refuse to go in and prepay (it is sadly becoming the norm). Otherwise, I am mostly cash. I take out a set amount after I get paid and put the change (including singles) into a big jar. I recently cashed it in and had an "extra" $1200!

I do not carry cash at all. I would be lucky to find 10 cents at the bottom of my purse. I use my debit card all of the time, but just remember, that just because you use the "credit" option of your transaction, that does not give you any different protection. It is just processed differently. To get the protection of a credit card, you MUST use an actual credit card.
