Rock River Cleanup

By GLEN LOYD   Friday, July 20, 2012 - 4:54 p.m.

My family and I waded across the Rock River at its lowest last week and cleaned up some shoreline. I personally pulled out a submerged bike, a lot of plastic bags and sheeting, and too many beverage containers. Like many of you I love the Rock. This week walking across Willard ave bridge, I spied additional junk...including more bikes.

packattack - Im not negative, im REAL. Why do we have such a problem with litter in and around our river? Would this be the DNR's territory? They are too busy chasing bugs to address the actuall issues you'd think they'd be concerned about. "When" im allowed to walk my dog on the trails next to the river I see trash all over, police certainly do not patrol the area so people dont care about throwing litter there.... they will NEVER get caught.

Glen,
How can we get an organized "Clean up day"
Set a date ,have the city collect the piles, make it fun and most of all worth while.
Sign up sheet at the Gazette ? City Building ?
I think it would be awesome.

Most of the trash that I see on the bank, are from worm containers. Those worm containers are in the areas where the "lazy man" fishes and the easiest to get to. I have also pulled 4 bike frames out of the water, and 2 highway markers as I fish. I only use lures and not worms. I have also pulled fishing line away from a goose that was caught in it. I really wish we had more like you glen. I try to do my part, it is just too overwhelming to make the difference we really need. The Rock river is one of the best small mouth bass fisheries, and should be kept in better shape. I would definately be interested in helping with a group. I just wish they would post it better.

Last weeks Tip of the week in Sundays paper by a local fishing guide stated it correctly . The so called sportsmen are "lazy slobs" Not all but a select few. It's really sad to see the trash on the banks of the River. He also said if you can carry it in ,you can carry it out. Unfortunately it will never end. That is my perspective as well. Nice job Glen !

Thank you, sir. I'm wondering how bicycles and strollers end up in the river to begin with. Are they broken and people just throw them off the bridge?

For it being an annual event, it sure isn't covered anywhere! This is the first I have heard about it. These things need to be better publicized.

Good information, fschultz. Janesville is a clean city, thanks to folks like the Annual Rock River Cleanup crew. I want to do a video of them.

Thanks, Glen. There is an annual Rock River cleanup in the Janesville area, but of course that doesn't solve the problem.

There is no one to really enforce the littering laws. Cops are too busy keeping kids from socializing in parking lots, the DNR is too busy counting animals, and the EPA is busy chasing problems that dont exist like globull warming. You could litter all the time and your odds of getting in trouble are less than winning the jackpot at a casino.

Thank you. We were taught never to throw anything on the ground. But then back in the 1930's we were a different breed. There is a littering law, I think it is 200.00 fine

I think they shouldnt have fines for littering. They should make it mandatory community service litter pickup as a penalty. Even if you throw a cigarette butt out the window you should get an instant 10 hours.

i have taken bag upon bag of garbage from the riverbank where i frequently fish, only to return a few days later to find it worse than before i picked out a few bags of garbage. sometimes i am truely disgusted because i was brought up to leave an area better than you found it.

Thank you, Nelle. I think most folks in Rock County are good at keeping things looking nice. It's a great place to live.
