My One Direction Concert for Janesville kids

By GLEN LOYD   Friday, November 23, 2012 - 12:01 a.m.

An 11-year-old who attends a Janesville grade school told me none of the kids from her school watches my videos here. Maybe these videos by the boy band One Direction will change that. Here is what kids are listening to today.

From Wikipedia: One Direction are an English-Irish boy band formed in London in 2010, consisting of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records after being formed and finishing third in the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor. They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records. The release of One Direction's debut studio album Up All Night (2011) established their international breakthrough. In addition, the album marked the first time a debut album by a British group had bowed at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and features the global chart-topping single "What Makes You Beautiful". After embarking on the Up All Night Tour, they followed the album with their second studio album Take Me Home (2012), which generated another record with One Direction becoming the youngest act in UK chart history to have a number one album and single simultaneously. The accompanying 2013 World Tour is set to begin in February 2013, with tickets grossing US$15.7 million for their Australian and New Zealand dates. One Direction have been described as sparking the resurgence in the boy band concept, and of forming part of a new "British Invasion" in the United States. As of August 2012, One Direction have sold over 12 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide. Their achievements include a BRIT Awardand 3 MTV Video Music Awards. Through combined music, merchandising, and touring sales, according to Nick Gatfield, the chairman and chief executive of Sony Music Entertainment UK, as of June 2012, One Direction represented a $50 million business empire. The Huffington Post proclaimed 2012 "The Year of One Direction"

And I think these young girls are listening to the music and beat rather than the words, the lyrics are going over there head, hopefully?

This song isn't Live While We're Young; it's That One Thing. And your granddaughter's parents might want to look up the lyrics to Live While We're Young, which reference: getting drunk; getting "some" from a girl the singer just met; and not letting the pictures from getting "some" leave the subject girl's cellphone. It's not too cute to have young girls singing those lyrics, and my daughter is not allowed to sing them, even though she has learned the song because I can't keep her from listening to other kids' iPods at recess.

Thank you, oldtimer, and to your granddaughter! I'll bet your granddaughter sings their songs all the time like mine does. It's fun to observe.

I don't agree, when our 11 year old grandaughter is here I have shown her some of your videos and enjoyed them. She likes to go fishing with me, so I know she likes nature, yes and she does like one direction.

Slick pop production, if unoriginal. But that's what boy bands are all about. (Also about making lots of money by enchanting the young ladies.) I imagine we'll be seeing them at the county fair in five years or so, as their popularity wanes and they start to lose the bloom of youth.
