Deadline looms for GM workers
The clock is ticking on General Motors’ latest special attrition program, as the 2,500 or so hourly employees at the Janesville plant will make a decision on whether to stay or leave by May 22.
The program offers full retirement-eligible workers—those with 30 years or more of service—either $45,000 (production) or $62,500 (skilled trades) to retire. Monthly payments ranging from $2,750 to $2,900 are available to bridge workers with 26 to 29 years to full retirement.
Cash buyouts of $70,000 for workers with less than 10 years or $140,000 for those with 10 or more year are available. In the case of the buyout, workers agree to quit and sever all ties with the automaker.
Sources inside the plant indicate a couple of hundred people have already filed their paperwork to leave. A similar program in 2006 resulted in a local workforce reduction of about 900 people or 26 percent of the hourly workers.

I think GM will be pulling a trick on the workers !Take the offer or no job !! We all know that you can't live your life on the rummors that we hear daily...will GM pull a big one out of the hat in the next few days ?? Just remember what we were told in 84-85.

Avidreader, you should have never have gone to the in-plant hacks. Their only job is to get you back to the line, no matter what. I won't let those people give me an asprin. I, like many there, refuse to go see them about anything. Do you remember the guy that had the engine hoist fall on him? He had a severe head injury....they just stood by and watched while the guy working next to him cared for his injuries and saved his life(he was an EMT). And to top it all off GM is denying his comp.....said he was too hard on the hoist. I guess it makes no difference that there were no safety cables in place to prevent it from happening at all.

I retired as of April 1st and still have no checks so if you plan to go, get the paperwork started now. Benefits can only do what the Detroit people can do for them. Yes it is great that we can retire and yes we do have to watch our pennies but when having to have surgery after surgery because of the job stress on the body, retirement is much better. And now I can just stay in a warm bed at 4AM each day when it is -30 out and be glad I dont have to get up and go. Another thought for those who drive 30 miles or more each way like I was, I am saving over 200.00 an month in fuel. I heard there are about 200 who signed up so far.

I took the buyout in 2006, after 10+ years. And to the person who says the work is not hard, did you spend your time there on light duty? I waited til the last possible second to sign my papers, because I wanted to make sure it was the right choice for me. The money while there was good, but for some of us, it wasn't worth the sacrifices we had to make. Don't tell me the work isn't hard, and from what I hear it has gotten twice as bad. I am 42 with the body of a 90 year old thanks to the easy work there. My back, ruptured the same disc twice while working. I need double knee replacement, but nobody will do it, because I am "too young". My right arm, from shoulder to finger tips is shot. And I no longer have arches in either of my feet which makes standing for any length of time painfull. Over and over I was told by their medical staff, your body is just getting used to the new demands, it will get better. Well, it is 2 years later and nothing is better. My kids? My quality time with them was picking them up from school and dropping them off at a babysitter, because even with 10 years in, I couldn't hold day shift. So I say to those thinking about the buy out, listen to your heart, and not the people who have nothing better to do than bitch about G.M. workers and how easy they have it.

If you have 30 years, take the buyout. Pay down your debts and start a new career. Life is much to short to spend all your productive years at one job, regardless of how well it pays.

30 and out is an option for a worker to leave if they so choose.
After 30 years they are fully vested in their pension, but are not required to leave.
Many choose to wait until social security age of 62+

IF I AM RIGHT, I THINK THEY VOTED FOR 30 YEARS AND OUT. THEN WHY DOSENT GM INFORCE THE 30 AND OUT? WOULDNT THAT OPEN UP JOBS FOR MORE PEOPLE? THERE ARE PEOPLE WORKING THER WITH EXCESS OF 30 YRS.

hey "who", you-being a former worker at GM-know as well as I do that quite a few new hires and summer help last less than a week, often less than a day, on the job at GM. Why? It isn't the low pay, as you will, I am sure, agree. By the way, why did you quit?

$3,000 per month is a lot of money for a lot of people. GM workers are way over paid. The work is hard? Give me a break.... Just can't have all the toys, ie snownmobiles, boats, four wheelers, etc.

Do you know how hard it is to live on 3 thousand dollars a month now days.. hope you all figure it out real good...even with your buy out money.....Your home better be paid for.your car better be paid off, and you will not get another one...for a while . That is for sure...With property taxes and food and gas all going up.. Good luck...what is that a week less than 300.00 bucks hot dang it

I'm going to guess that there will be 210 people that will take the buy out. The buy out may seem attractive to some, but it's not really that good of a deal! Especially if you are just 50 years old and still 15 years away from social security and started your family late, therefore having several kids still in elementary school.

A lot of employees will sign up in the last couple of weeks. I'm going to guess anywhere between 400 to 450 people will take the buyout by the deadline. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers turn out to be higher than my estimate.
