Residents reminded about snow rules

You’ve been warned.

This time, you’ll have to move your car or face consequences.

During the snow emergency earlier this week, the Janesville Police Department issued about 520 warnings to people whose vehicles were improperly parked, said Deputy Chief Steve Kopp of the Janesville Police Department.

During the next snow emergency, which could be tonight, the department will write $20 tickets. A snow emergency is declared when plowing begins. Usually, plowing starts after about 2 inches of snow.

Tonight’s AccuWeather forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches of snow, so now is the time to brush up on the rules.

Once the city has declared a snow emergency, vehicles most be moved from city streets and parking lots until they have been plowed.

To determine if the city has declared a snow emergency,

-- Check The Janesville Gazette’s Web site, www.gazettextra.com.

-- Listen to WCLO 1230 AM, WJVL 99.9 FM or WKPO 105.9.

-- Check the city of Janesville Web site, www.ci.janesville.wi.us.

-- Join the city’s snow emergency e-mail alert list. To sign up, go to www.ci.janesville.wi.us. Choose “e-mail lists” from the selections on the left hand side of the page.

-- Call the city’s snow hotline (608) 755-SNOW (7669). Do not call 911.

The city winter weather information brochuer said that all residential, commercial, and industrail sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 12hr. after a snowfall. Hope this helps

Snow removal in Janesville is much better than in Madison. Alternate side parking, like in Madison, doesn't allow for plows to get to the snow before it becomes more difficult to remove.

Now that the city says it will ticket for snow emergency parking, maybe they can start ticketing for people running red lights at the busy intersections.

I would appreciate an article that reviews the rules for shoveling sidewalks too, such as timeframes, consequences, etc. This is the first year in a long time I have had a sidewalk and I want to make sure we are within the expectations for removal.
And thanks to the plow drivers who are out there when no one else wants to be driving - much appreciated!

Why doesn't the city move to alternate side parking for snow emergencies? Most large and small cities do this--why doesn't Janesville. Because it's always been done this way--not a good enough answer!

Its the same people year after year that for the most part are just to Lazy to move thier vehicle off the street. At least that the case in my area.I just wish they would start ticketing and not keep warning these deadbeats.
