Roundabout training for Janesville residents

JANESVILLE — The City of Janesville hopes to educate local motorists about two new roundabouts.

Public Works Director Jack Messer says the city wants to familiarize citizens with the way roundabouts work by publishing a brochure and airing a 10-minute video on JATV. He says roundabouts aren't complicated, and people who haven't researched them will probably figure the roundabouts out.

Messer says the city doesn't have plans for the next intersection with a roundabout, but uses them as a tool and in intersections where they fit.

hahaha...there are going to be so many accidents out at the new Menard's once they open...you can tell by just looking at the dozens of road signs trying to tell people how to use a roundabout. one word...wow.

If the round about training proposed by Janesville Public Works Director Messer is as good as his ability to plow snow in our city, we are in a world of hurt.

When the roundabout went up off HWY 30 at the corner of HWY T and Thompson Rd, it was fun watching people just completely confused as to what to do. Vehicle in the roundabout has right of way. How much simpler is that?

Why they need to "train" people to use them is just a waste. They should put more into training people how to just drive in the first place instead of just handing licenses out willy-nilly.

We had them when I lived down in North Carolina. The joke was that you could tell the Yankees- they go around more than once. Just kidding. Madison has them. Training? What a waste of taxpayer money. I'd like to know how much that training is costing us????

Roundabouts are easy. Just remember who has the right away first!! They do make traffic a lot easier. Trust me. We have a few of them down in Arizona.

I just don't understand why they want to "train" you how to use them. Just follow what the sign says and you'll do fine.

I was stuck in a roundabout off the interstate, I didnt know what I was supposed to do, I drove in a circle twice before traffic cleared enough for me to change lanes and jump out. I thought it was very confusing without warning, I hope janesville has them well marked ahead of time, its not as simple when you just come upon one, I had never heard of such a thing before that. They do keep traffic flowing but I think it certainly will take some getting used to...

Madison has a few of them. I learned on my own up there. Its quite simple. Just watch for the flow and you'll get the gist of it. I did.

If you need to be taught how to use a roundabout, you should not be driving.

Roundabouts offer better continuous flow than traffic lights or stop signs, which is why they are becoming popular. This is the kind of roundabout that was "reinvented" by the British in the 1960s and has spread worldwide. The first one in the US was in Vail in the 1970s.

Once you get used to them they ARE simple.

Light systems for intersections are very expensive up front and expensive to maintain. Signed intersections on busy residential streets cause unnecessary stop and go traffic. Roundabouts are a simple and cost effective solution, I'd like to see more of them.

It's about time the city has stepped up to improve the flow of traffic. Now if we could just get the signal controlled intersections upgraded to smart signals, I believe traffic in Janesville would really move smoothly.

Why is it that Janesville seems to be incapable of making any kind of new road construction simple? Was a roundabout really necissary, cant have a four way intersection...some stop signs, maby a light...come on people.
