UW-Madison student killed
MADISON – Police sent to check on a resident found a college student dead in the apartment Wednesday.
Dane County Coroner John Stanley said the death of Brittany Sue Zimmermann, 21, a UW-Madison student from Marshfield, was being investigated as a homicide.
Details of the death were not disclosed, but Stanley told the Wisconsin State Journal it was not a “natural house death.”
Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said a large number of detectives were called to the homicide scene, about five blocks from the state Capitol on West Doty Street. He said officers initially responded to the apartment about 1 p.m.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area was asked to call the Madison Area Crime Stoppers tip line at (608) 266-6014.
University officials expressed condolences to family and friends of Zimmerman, who was said to be majoring in medical microbiology and immunology.
"... updates related to campus safety awareness and police response were posted as soon as information became available," according to a UW-Madison news release. "A campus-wide broadcast email was sent at roughly 6 p.m. to raise broader awareness."
"All evening events and classes are continuing as scheduled," according to a statement from the Dean of Students Office. "However, members of the campus community are urged to walk in groups or take advantage of SAFEwalk and SAFEride programs available on campus. Call (608) 262-5000 for detailed information."
