From the WCLO newsroom:

JANESVILLE — A 25-year-old Alabama man is ordered to pay a little over $37,000 restitution for damage he caused to the Janesville Odd Fellows Club and Looking Glass tavern in November 2007.

Jeremy Brown pleaded guilty to burglary, criminal damage to property, and theft in the incident.

Thursday, in Rock County Court, Jeff Jones from the Odd Fellows Club and Matthew Schreier from the Looking Glass tavern, totaled up the damage and subtracted the difference from what insurance will cover.

Jones says he's not expecting Brown to come up with the money right away, so he and his fellow club members will do a lot of the repair work for the contractor. Jones said Brown is expected to pay off his debt at the rate of about $100 a month.

My dad, Jeff Jones, tried so hard to get this guy more time behind bars, my mom thinks he sould serve some time at our house, seeing as how much this one incident has changed our family, my dad at meeting 3 times a week, and then working at the lodge, trying to fix it up, I hate Mr. Brown for what he did to all the families of the Odd Fellows. We know he will not make good on his payments, so I hope he will be living with his guilt, let it haunt him forever.

So he will go work somewhere for cash and never report it and never pay his debt. I have heard of people who have done this and they get away with it. They need to figure out a better way of paying back the victim/s. $100.00/month isn't nothing, it's not going to break him I'm sure. Good thing he doesn't the IRS for back taxes cause they would leave him broke for sure.

I wonder if the insurance company will go after him for the money they paid out? I see he didn't plead guilty to arson. That would change things. I don't think we know the whole story. I'll side with the judge.

In a perfect world the money would be paid through probation and parole. HOWEVER, there are alot of defendants who are released from probation without paying a dime of restituion. Whether it is because of financial hardship or flat out avoiding payment who knows. The probation department then petitions the court to convert the unpaid restitution to a civil judgment. Guess what, It is then the victim's responsibility to collect the debt as if they sued that individual. The defendant has to be gainfully employed before a wage garnishment can then be put into effect. Oh and by the way that is more money out of the victims pocket to do a garnishment.

"How is restitution collected from the offender?

The Wisconsin Department of Probation and Parole monitors probation. Restitution payments depend on the financial resources of the offender and the amount of restitution ordered by the court. The offender pays the restitution to their probation and parole agent, who forwards the money to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, which then forwards the money to you."

i agree jvldude!!! absolutly! thats not fair to the owners at all... they may not want to own their businesses for 30 more yrs! gees! it really should have been more! like a regular loan payment... in fact, he should try for a loan and let the businesses have their money, and make him pay a bank.. that way if he dont pay it.. his crap gets repo'd!!! BULL! But at least its soemthing... just not enough!

Come on this should have been a little more closer to a house payment or a car payment to make it sting a bit more like 400 or 500 per month

Well, yeah, jail is just free room and board.

It just gets me when criminals and thieves just get jail time and no restitution..They laugh all the way to the bank on both ends so why should they stop committing crimes??

Just think of having that hang over your head for 30 yrs. At least they are getting paid and every month he is reminded of the stupid things he did. Sometimes I think that is better than letting them cop out and do jail time. He is responsible for his actions now.

I am glad that justice is finally served. Matt is a good friend of mine and the Glass is a great place. I felt really bad for odd fellows and Glass when this all went down. I hope this will remind brown of the stupid decisions he has made.

It is going to take him 30 years to pay this back at that rate. Without interest!
