WAUSAU — Wisconsin wildlife officials say hunters killed 20 percent fewer deer during the nine-day gun hunt than a year ago.

Department of Natural Resources deer expert Keith Warnke said Tuesday the count suggests deer populations may be moving closer to management goals.

The DNR says a preliminary count showed hunters registered 276,985 deer following the hunt that ended Sunday.

The DNR had estimated the state’s deer population at 1.7 million this fall, about 100,000 fewer than a year ago.

Didn't see a deer during the season! We hunt in Northwest Walworth County, Turtle Lake area! No deer around, very little shooting. I think the DNR did a great job in getting rid of the deer in our area! CWD the greatest farce known to man, funded by American Family Ins.

I saw more deer this year than any year past. Two in the freezer so nothing to complain about. I've had recent years where haven't seen anything so guess it all evens out. If you didn't see anything this year, guess it is time to get up and move...I've never had a deer walk in and lay down in front of me.

And another 9 day holiday hunt starting Christmas Eve in the CWD zones.

Don't forget there is still an antlerless hunt in December all the nay slayers. I was fortunate and tagged two. Meat in the freezer is a good feeling and helps the grocery bill in the right direction.
Right place, right time = Venison.
There are deer out there... (No I don't side with the dnr on there herd estimate its off.) Break your routine if nothing is what you continue to see, nothing is not what you do.

We got enough deer for our family and some to other families. We are stocked for the winter and part of the summer. And we'll probably get some more with bows. It's been a good season for us. Wish others had the same we did! Good luck to you bow hunters!

Tj, it was mid to upper 30's where I was during the day. Didnt even need the artic camping gear I took with me. Couple years ago I could hunt in shorts and an orange t-shirt.

The other states have done a way better job of how they handle the CWD and many other issues. They scared the crap out of everyone and jumped the gun on this whole deal. It has been around forever in other states and they have dealt with it. Look how long it's taken them to figure out the turkey hunting zones. Now you still have to pick a 5 day season rather than having a couple months to shoot your bird like other states.

Do away with the earn a buck, I only bowhunt and could have shot a buck on opening bow season. I hunt in the CWD zone. The earn a buck doesnt make any sense.

"Put the gun season back so it STARTS on thanksgiving weekend and go 16 days like it used to."

When the heck was that? Been hunting deer for 40 years, never seen a 16 day season or a opener on Thanksgiving weekend.

By the way I am not disagreeing with you fellas, the DNR's estimates of the heard are defiantly off, and exactly what state is it that dose a better job? None of the 12 or so I've hunted in.

The DNR using this years kill to estimate the size of next years heard. Anybody got a better idea of how to do that? Speak up, ain't nobody figured that out in the last hundred years.

I guess that's my point. It's different everywhere you hunt, so the DNR's numbers are NOT accurate. South Central, Southwest part of the state, there are plenty of deer and always have been. I saw plenty. That doesn't mean the same numbers exist in other locations. And if they think eradicating a heard is possible or the answer for that matter, they need a reality check. None of us will have deer hunting in the future for ourselves or our children.

Too warm? I went into the woods at 9 below zero opening day.

Didnt see squat. Heard very little shooting. Dump the "earn a buck" if you really want to eradicate a herd. Put the gun season back so it STARTS on thanksgiving weekend and go 16 days like it used to. Pretty useless to be out in the woods when its warm. Deer arent gonna move unless you practically step on them.

Same crap, different year. The DNR is playing games again and it's insulting that they think hunters aren't aware of it. We all know what they're up to. Amazing how they can estimate deer numbers the way they do. Here's an idea. Instead of estimating a deer herd by the state, why don't you estimate it by the county? There is NO WAY you guessing the state herd is accurate. The same number of deer per square mile is different in every part of the state. Keep it up and there will be no deer herd. If you compare how the WI DNR handles themselves compared to other states, it's embarrassing. They themselves should be embarrassed. They are the laughing stock. CWD has been around for years and years. You messed up by jumping the gun and scaring the crap out of people that didn't know any better and now all sportsman are suffering because of it.

I agree with sabotslug. Everone I talked to said the same thing. They either saw one or nothing at all. I'm sure next year we will have a 2 million herd and more earn a buck units in the state.

The same old BS the DNR says every year! Hunters shoot less and deer numbers go up yet hunters all over the state say they see fewer deer every year. The DNR will do or say anything to make sure their deer eradication plan succeeds.
