Slick roads will create messy commute

Rock County roads are snow-covered and slippery, which could make for a treacherous commute this afternoon.

A dispatcher at the Rock County Communications Center said there have been many accidents on county roads but none serious. County snowplows are out.

In the city of Janesville, trucks have been salting roads for several hours and started clearing snow from main streets about an hour ago, said John Whitcomb, city operations director. The city hasn't yet decided if it will clear side streets, he said.

The city of Beloit has declared a snow emergency, but the city of Janesville had not as of 2:30 p.m.

Why would you thank someone for doing a job when you are not happy with the results, if any. I know that it must be super hard to sit in a plow truck and ride along the side of the road blocking the ends of driveways and knocking over mailboxes and getting told what roads to plow and what roads not to.... whatever. It's their job, that we pay for out of taxes... if anything... they should be thanking us. ;)

USARET-I will happily thank a city employee for clearing my street cause they are doing their job. However the decission on wether to plow or not to plow is not theirs. It falls on management.

Gamma... you won't get no refund. However, home insurance should take care of your mailbox if somebody vandalized it and "took off". Then again, that's where your extra money spent on insurance goes to.

Do any of you ever think of thanking the city employees out there who are trying to clean the streets. Talk about a thankless job. Enjoy the season, we should have about 34 more snows so that means you all have at least 34 more times to complain.

marymac--I hope the cops DO come down my street looking for cars parked on the street. Maybe then the cops would say..."hey someone should plow this, I'm stuck." I can only dream...

Does anybody know how many side streets there in the city? I'm sure there is more than plows and man power or do expect them to work 48hrs straight.

Have thought of that but can't leave my family or job. Besides the south is even worse! they have hurricanes and sinkholes, aligators and poisonus snakes (Florida that is ) At least with the snow we are prepared that it is coming and can have our house stocked with the necessities (food & toilet paper !)that will last a few days until we do finaly get plowed out. I hate winter...use to love it as a kid, but now that I have to drive in it and shovel the walk way etc it sucks !

Here is an idea. If you hate snow and winter so bad, maybe you should consider moving south. I personally love it.

We weren't plowed yesterday and someone SLID into our car a block from our house on the ice that had formed. They were not going fast, just tried to stop on an icy incline. This morning someone took out our mailbox when they spun out in front of our house. Of course, they took off. And we pay over $5,000 in taxes. Think we could get a partial refund?

I would rather they not plow my road, which is South Ringold. They didn't last Sunday.
When they plow there is so much snow sometimes I can't even get out of my driveway... lol I look super sill trying to back out and my tires just spin and spin and spin... and sometimes it's so heavy that I can't shovel it out... did I mention that I really really really love winter??

Try living in the country. My road is still snow and ice covered from the last round of snow, now I have to deal with the new stuff ontop of it all. I either have to try to go up hill to hit Oakhill or go down hill and hope that I dont slide into the river. And by the way leaving early and going slow is not always an option when the road is impassible. Some days I just have to call my daughter in for snow excuse at school. Not willing to risk our lives on bad roads, maybe I am too cautious but it just isn't worth it.

Wish sometimes I lived in town, but I couldn't have my chickens and pigeons there or my large garden. At least then I could catch the bus to go somewhere. As it is the closest bus stop is about 1 1/2 miles from me uphill in the snow no less... LOL

Kianna must live in my neighborhood. Our subdivision is always the Last to get plowed. Now, under our current snow is pure ice. And BTW, MY main route of travel is from my house. Not on Center or Milton Ave. I have a small car, so leaving early doesn't help me when I have to PUSH the snow!

We live in Wisconsin. Snow is a part of our lives. The roads are plowed in order of most traveled to least traveled. The city focuses mainly on keeping high traffic areas clear. It sucks when your street doesn't get plowed, but main artery roads are more traveled than Smith Ln. and whatever other side streets we live on. Leave a little early for your destination, drive a little slower, and you should have no problem. If everyone would follow those 2 simple steps it would cut drasticly the number of weather related accidents we see every winter.

Just so everyone is clear on this--the guys(or gals) plowing have nothing to do with what gets plowed or not plowed--management calls the shots

I think the forecast should read, "accumulation of 3-5 inches of snow and 3-5 days of complaining to follow". Doesn't the city have a hotline that people can call to complain about services provided (or not provided, for that matter)? I imagine one of the previous posters has that number handy--can you share?

I wonder if we can fine them for not clearing the snow like we would be fined if we didnt clear the snow on our sidewalks. city has special "rules"

GREAT!!! They never cleared our streets from Sunday's snowfall and now they're just one solid sheet of ice! Last year, they quit plowing toward the end of winter and the ice built up so high, it blocked the storm drains. We had ponds in our streets. What costs more? Plowing or road repair??? This place is really becoming a sad place to live. We have ridiculous property taxes and they can't even plow our darn streets. Oh, and don't try doing it yourself! You'll get fined!

I wonder if the "side roads" that they live on will be cleared? That is just crazy! have they looked at the weather forecast we are supposed to get more snow in a couple of days. Just keep adding to the pile!

"the city hasn't yet decided if it will clear side streets", NO KIDDING!! They have not even cleared our street from the first snow!!! Maybe the lazy city will get to our side street about the 4th or 5th snow or so. idiots.

Why wouldn't they plow the side streets??? All this snow will turn to an icy nightmare if they don't. It's not like it is supposed to be 45 degrees tomorrow and the snow will melt!!
