Janesville man pleads guilty in son's death
JANESVILLE -- A Janesville man pleaded guilty in Rock County Court this morning to a felony charge stemming from the death of his son.
Charles S. Rivers, 35, pleaded guilty to child neglect resulting in death in the December 2007 death of his son, Israel Gordon.
A misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer was dismissed in a plea agreement.
Rivers and his girlfriend are accused of going to buy drugs for Rivers' heroin addiction after his 14-month-old son was injured in a bathtub accident at his apartment on Linn Street in Janesville, according to the criminal complaint.
Medical treatment was not immediatly sought for the boy, who later died, according to the criminal complaint.
Rivers' co-defendant and girlfriend, April Peabody, 27, Janesville, was previously sentenced to 18 months probation with required parenting classes, counseling and drug and alcohol assessment.
A felony child neglect charge filed against Peabody was reduced to a misdemeanor child neglect charge in a plea agreement.

Kleej,
You couldn't have said it better. The only people that would argue with what you said are the one's who don't want to hear it because the truth hurts. We've become a society of selfish people who only care about what's in it for ME! The evidence is overwhelming. A proper education is in order.

JohnDoe... To try and prevent this from happening again we need this man and this woman to get a REAL punishment. No one can stop sick people from doing what they do in their own homes but maybe if we give these people what they really deserve the next person may think twice about being so stupid and heartless. Most of us on here are parents from this very community, we think of our children and other innocent children when we hear stories like this. How can we not be angry or upset? How can you not? Rivers hasnt been sentanced yet and yes he did plead guilty (thank God) but that doesnt mean he is going to get jail time, not at all. It says there was some type of plea done a lot of times that means pleading guilty to one charge and getting many others lowered or dropped. Based on the BS they pulled with April it seems as though they will try the same thing with Charles. They whole "poor father" thing, he lost a child and we should all feel sorry for him, the same stuff they said about April. Its crap and its all a big show put on by these creeps!

It boils down to accountability. We used to have that in our country. It only happened when people had great foundational principles to guide them. These principles have been compromised and compromised by the agenda driven intellects who could care less about right or wrong. In their world, the only thing "right" is what's right for them and the only thing that's "wrong" is anything that doesn't benefit them. It's happened slowly through the years and this why our generations of people deny truth and have no concept of reality anymore because it's been erased from our culture's conscience! In other words, the "few" with their selfish agenda's are winning and the "many", people who make it a personal priority to live a morally balanced life are losing. The seeds the "WE" have planted over the past years have now grown and we're reaping what we've sown! We're not united anymore and we're not together fighting the diseases that are killing this once great country. Where have all the leaders gone? Is there anyone out there willing to step up and make a stand anymore?

Where is the justice here? Our system has to change you get time in prison for selling drugs or getting caught drunk driving multiple times but to kill a child and get your hands slapped. What a joke. The judge that has handled this case needs to be voted out.

So...all of you who have an opinion here....what is the answer to prevent this from happening again?
.
You can't undo what has already been done.
.
So direct your anger towards prevention...and be realistic.
.
AND, be careful what you wish for...

I remember running into April few months before this happened said she was pregnant by Charles. She said he would be a much better father then her first child's dad. Killing a baby is a better father? Lets just hope her child is in the proper care now and safe from these people.

A Lot of this wasted breathers going around!! Ever seen where some people are on the fence of being normal & not, these two definitely need a padded room.

What are people complaining about? He's pleading guilty to a felony charge, not to a misdemeanor. He was the one present at the time of injury, not the mother. He has agreed to a charge carrying a substantial sentence. He will spend time in prison.
.
This isn't "Justice Idol", folks. "Text to 3334 for life in prison!"

You can cause the death of a child and get less of a charge the slapping a spouse. God rest the baby as he no longer has to suffer the addiction behaviors of this so called man who was his father and obligated to protect him from any harm and yet he caused it left him untreated most likely in pain until he died just to get his heroin what a joke of a system we have.................We may not have a good judicial system but the Man upstairs does.

you basically kill a baby for your drug addiction and it gets reduced to a misdemeanor from a felony? Hmmm...
Think he'll be done like a pedophile's done in lock-up?

Was he sentenced today? If not, we can find out the sentencing date on the WCCA and attend. We as members of the community can write letters to the sentencing judge. Address it and mail it ASAP and the judge will read them. IF he was not sentenced today.

I also have been following tis case from day one. Today I sat in a court room The foster mother who was once again never notified of this court date even after requesting to be notified. However nobody was asked to speak on Israels behalf today. Further more I remember everyone complaining about nobody being there for April's hearing. Nobody stood united today. It's a shame that everybody was so quick to judge. I am glad the foster mother is saving all her words for the most important time. It is Charles who needs to hear these words from her and April will hear them also because she was there today and I'm sure she will be there again

Let us pray, The little boy is at peace maybe this was God's Will saving this child of Year's of neglect. As for the parents when and only when they are sober will they know what they have done and will have to live with that the rest of there lives. As for the Judicial System it is broke as needs to be fixed, but there are no simple answers we as a people have to only believe in our faith and pray that things will work out.

I remember when I first heard this story and how worked up I was about it. I am almost used to these kind of sentances now. There was no one at the trial to speak on behalf of the little boy, not his real mother or his foster parents. I saw April Peabody at a camping resort where she works back in September. At the time my daughter was about 18 months. As soon as she even looked at her I wanted to jump across that table and strangle her, tell her I know what she did and I know that if she doesnt get the justice she deserves in this life she will in the next. This is sick and sad and I hope this man will get some kind of REAL punishment that he so very much deserves.

I'm tired of plea agreements. What kind of plea agreement did this child get? Sometimes I don't know how the laywers and judges can look themselves in the mirror and say justice was served. That in itself is a crime!

This is beyond unbelievable...wtf? How can this woman get off with a sentence like that? That isn't even a slap on the wrist for god's sake. What a joke! If I was the judge on this case, I don't think I could go out in public and look anyone in the eye. Unreal.

I can't explain the kind of rage that shutters through my body when I hear stories like this one. As a parent that has lost a child...to hear about such negligence saddens me completely.
Parenting class "what" it's a little late now, isn't it. It is sad when someone needs a class on how to be a parent. The only thing anyone needs to know about being a good parent...is love your children.
Sad...Sad...people...

I can't believe these two did not get life in prison at the least... They could be addicted to hard drugs and their negligence killed an innocent child, yet SHE is given parenting classes?? This is nuts.
