Irony of the week: State hiring workers to deal with unemployment claims

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state has hired 83 more workers to deal with a surge in unemployment claims.

Department of Workforce Development spokesman Richard Jones says the new short-term workers have already been hired and will boost the group by 20 percent.

Some are agency retirees and will start by January at hourly salaries of between $15 and $17 an hour.

Preliminary state figures show Wisconsin lost 32,400 jobs in November compared with the same month in 2007, falling to 2.87 million, while the unemployment rate shot upward that month.

The workers’ salaries are federally funded and will cost about $215,000 a month.

The hiring comes as Gov. Jim Doyle wants to reduce the number of state workers by 700 in response to a $5.4 billion projected state budget shortfall.

Hiring 83 unemployment insurance staff will not affect the state budget shortfall because the funds for these employees are not general revenue funds. The funds for the administration of the UI program come from federal funds. They also are from a separate fund that is not part of the money that is paid to unemployed workers. The unemployment insurance law and system is complex. Former UI employees were hired to limit training time that is required with hiring staff with no UI experience. People have been having trouble getting through to speak to unemployment insurance staff, so the quicker staff can be trained and be ready to assist people, the better for everyone who is trying to collect unemployment insurance or to find out if they are eligible.

You better believe the unemployment worker processing the claims is still going to bring home less on their paycheck than what GM employees will be collecting in unemployment benefits.

Now here's a plan. We can create an economy in such despair the only comparison is shades of the Great Depression. So many Wisconsinites are unemployed, so many thousands of people are in economic peril we find ourselves in need to hire 80 people to record the unemployed. (Charles Dickens-esque?) Some of the newly hired, according to this poorly written article’s innuendos, are former unemployment employees that don’t actually need or want the job. Now there is a bit of poetry. And, we can find a gleam of cynical joy in the new hire stats. Good grief people.
Now let’s try to decipher this typical Associated Press release. What does this sentence mean?:
"Preliminary state figures show Wisconsin lost 32,400 jobs in November compared with the same month in 2007, falling to 2.87 million, while the unemployment rate shot upward that month."
What is 2.87 million? What month did the unemployment rate shoot up?
It sounds like one of those Chinese written instructions manuals for my coffee maker lamely translated into English.
By the way, 32,400 jobs lost in one month? We have a bigger problem than worrying about 80 State employees expedited into service. Yikes!
Considering "the media" in general spends millions following around mediocre college football teams to insignificant bowl games, it does not surprise me we all stay happily confused (good economic patients to the end) about what kind of dangerous economic mess we are in.
And, it is always reassuring (thanks for nothing) to have a national information packaging clearing house validate what most of us working poor have known for five years - we are, and have been in, deep economic do-do.

What about a Bailout for the American Population in general? What about those that are hungry and homeless and have to stand in line at The Salvation Army to get a hot plate of food? WHERE IS THEIR BAILOUT?

The one thing they said that stood out was- "You can bet the CEOs will not be standing at the Unemployment line."
.
But if they did, I bet there'd be a bailout waiting for them.

I watched D.L Hughley today on CNN. He made a great comment along the lines of- When America had it good, they did not care about the type of vehicle that they bought and the amount of gas it would take to operate such a vehicle. As a result, gas prices soared. Then, they stopped buying said vehicles and purchased fuel efficent vehicles that were not produced in the USA. This lead to automakers not having work for its employees. They then touched on the Bailout for the Big 3 Automakers. The one thing they said that stood out was- "You can bet the CEOs will not be standing at the Unemployment line."

It's funny how all of the stories on this page always get related back to GM. It seems that those who have been tied with GM in any way support GM and those who don't have any relation to GM have a negative view point. Being an unbiased person who lives thousands of miles away from Janesville I find the criticism a little harsh. The reality is that the more someone makes the more money they have to spend. That money spent stimulates the economy. Restaurants and service industries flourish from the influx of money. The fact that some people are glad to see GM go puzzles me.

These comments are all so ridiculous. I'm sure there are skills involved in doing this job and last time I checked Wisconsin is an Equal Opportunity Employer, so EVERYONE can apply if they choose too! Nurse4u hit the nail rght on the head. The rest are way off! Our economy is a wreck and we NEED more jobs created.

I've read most of these jobs are temporary. Honestly, the pay scale seems reasonable to me. People can't afford to go without benefits during such tough times, so it's important that staffing is sufficient to handle the extra work load. In addition, these jobs can be stressful and require a great deal of organizational and people skills that not everyone has. However, considering our state is running out of unemployment money, I'm not sure what priorities need to be addressed first.

jguernsey - "For one they have to deal with the public and to be honest some unemployed people may not be the most pleasant to deal with." Every retail, medical employee, cashier ..... has to deal with unpleasent people while working. Where is their "reasonable compensation"? What's ironic about this is how people feel GM employees were SO overpaid for non-skill and now causing possible bankruptcy for GM. Yet processing electronic unemployment claims at 15-17 an hour for a state with "a $5.4 billion projected state budget shortfall" is desearved. Oh yea, that's right "it's no big secret that state jobs can pay well" just like it was no secret that GM pays well.
I'm sorry, but the state will never balance the budget on WI residents tax payments. They will soon be behind the Big 3 asking for a bailout, but that's ok right? Because these claims processors have to deal with some unhappy people.

While I'm not certain about what their actual duties are I can venture a guess that the don't "just type." For one they have to deal with the public and to be honest some unemployed people may not be the most pleasant to deal with. Not to say that every job that you have to deal with the public should pay $15-17 an hour, but compensation should be reasonable. Dealing with people can sometimes be a real pain. Besides, it's a state job, it's no big secret that state jobs can pay well.
