Former Monroe County sheriff's department lt. charged with abuse

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A former Monroe County sheriff's lieutenant who admitted to having sexual contact with a mentally ill female inmate has been charged with abuse.

The felony charge against 60-year-old David Schaldach was announced today by Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.

According to the complaint, Schaldach was a supervisor at the Monroe County Jail when he had sexual conduct with the female prisoner at least twice in 2002. The complaint says the inmate suffered from a variety of mental health conditions.

The complaint says Schaldach admits to having sexual contact with the woman.

Schaldach faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

He's scheduled for an initial appearance on Monday.

Schaldach did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
