Soldier with local ties dies in Iraq
JANESVILLE--The commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post said his grandson was killed in Iraq on Wednesday.
Sgt. Cody Legg, 23, died from what his family said was insurgent gunfire while he tried to rescue two of his soldiers who had just been shot.
Legg is the grandson of Lamar Deuel Sr., commander of the VFW Post No. 1621 in Janesville, and his wife, Buneva, president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Legg's uncle, Lamar Deuel Jr., who also was injured in Iraq in 2005, lives in Janesville.
Legg was born and raised in San Diego and was a member of the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, New York.
Funeral services and burial will take place in San Diego, but a memorial service also is being planned at the VFW here.

My sincere sympathies go to the Deuel family during this time. Their grandson was truly a hero and all Americans owe him a debt of gratitude. May God comfort and bless this family.

Mr. & Mrs. Deuel,
If you read this, I just wanted to send my condolences. I know you were very proud of your grandson! I am grateful for the story you told me about Cody and your son when you were at Parker the other day.
I am also glad that the Gazette printed this story.

Mymaro, please don't make this story an argument. I was simply stating an opinion. It doesn't make this family's loss less significant and I am not patronizing them. Don't be so quick to dismiss my comments as ridiculous. I agree that this man died performing a heroic act and it is truly horrible. Again, my sympathies to the family.

His name needs to be corrected to Sgt. Cody R. Legg.
His surname was Legg, not Leggs.

Regardless of my feelings on this war, I have no problem saying I support these troops who put their lives on the line every day 100%. God bless the family of this young man. He was a true hero.

God bless America that we have such fine people that give all, and ask little. I believe LBJ said it correct back in the 60's when he said why are we sending our boys 7,000 miles around the world to fight a war the vietmese should be fighting on there own.

May God bless this young man's family. So many of us take for granted the freedoms that we are blessed with due to the ultimate sacrifices of our men and women of the armed forces who are laying it all on the line everyday for us. Let's not forget our hero's from the past century's who also have given their lives for their country and made it possible for all of us to have such a great country to be proud of. Unfortunately, a huge amount of our upcoming generations aren't getting taught our country's history and therefore cannot understand what our forefather's have gone through and much is taken for granted. As parents and role models for our young, we need to make the children we are raising understand what honor and duty are all about. Character, integrity, morals and values. We are desperately lacking solid leadership in this country because these principles are being compromised by the garbage media out there.... video games, tv, pornography, tabloids, music with explicit lyrics etc.... We are a society who is rapidly losing touch with reality. The future of this country is at stake if we don't step up and make some changes. Let's not let the efforts and sacrifices by our past and present men and women be in vain! We all need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves if that person staring back is a person of character and integrity. I'll start with myself. Anyone else?

My brother was just sent back to Iraq. He and his wife and 2 sons live in TN. However, we, his immediate family, live here in WI. I can tell you one thing, I am proud of my brother and the men he serves with, whether I believe in the war or not, and I sure the heck want people who know him to remember here and every other place he lived in. To the family, you have my sincere condolences. Your grandson/son/brother gave his life for all of us. I truly am appreciative. May God bless each and everyone of you.

I don't mean to sound insincere and I genuinely feel for the family but can't help feeling that this belongs in The San Diego Gazette, not The Janesville Gazette. I think that family should be allowed to grieve in peace.
