Raiders could become Red Wings

The Milton School Board heard the first reading tonight of a proposal to change Milton Middle School's team name from the Raiders to the Red Wings.

The student council proposed the change after polling the student body, said Tim Schigur, Milton Middle School principal.

The middle school rarely uses the Raiders nickname and doesn't have a logo, he said. The council hoped to choose a new team name and design a logo that students could get behind, he said.

I wish they would just keep it the same. And since when do you change your mascot just because the kids that year want to? Are they going to get in the habit of changing names every few years just because they want to practice the democratic process? I thought that is why they have student council elections to give them a taste of real life politics.
I know some people think of it as a put down to the Native Americans, but I think it is just the oposite and it is a honor to be a Raider or a (heaven forbid) Redman. I have had the great pleasure and honor to talk with many Native Americans who were medicine men/women and even some regognized "Chiefs". And not one of them thought it was offensive to be called a Redman.
In fact if you know anything about Native Americans they themselves say they are of the Red Nation and follow the "Red" path (in refrence to their native religion) A few of the people I talked to infact said they thought it was wrong to change a name and that you can be too Politicaly Correct these days.

Oh by the way I went to Milton schools and no matter what they change the name to I will always be a former Milton Raider and a Redman.

please do a little research of your own on the original term usage of the word REDNECK. Originally it was not a derogatory word. Very similar to the original temr GAY (which means happy-- needed to clarify that so I don't get all reprimanded and everything).

western illinois' nickname is leathernecks. i ran into 193 x-marines who were so offended they were crying their eyes out. if we are worried about offending people so much lets leave out the word cracker on all products, especially the school menus. red offends me because it relates to the word redneck which is a racially derogatory term along with cracker, grey, blue eyes etc. so many names that are used to disrespect all people. also big, small, tiny, large, fat, skinny. there is even a mountain called old baldy and an eagle called bald...wow! now that hurts....lol

The point that some of you nay-sayers have missed is that student involvement with some issue like a school mascot and logo introduces students to participatory democracy. It may seem trivial or a waste of taxpayer money to you, but these students will be taxpayers some day and particpation in a process like this helps them appreciate the democracy they live in and why they pay taxes to live in it.

Some of you ought to go back to high school civics class and read the lessons you obviously skipped.

This is such a waste of tax payers time. May be that time spent could be used to educate, or these people could get a part time to fund the new school they want to push on the tax payer.

Maybe the school board should concentrate on more important things (like a contract for their teachers, etc) then worrying about a middle school's logo. My kids went through there and I didn't even know they were called the Raiders. Who cares?!

It is good to hear that the Milton School Board is dealing with this extremely urgent issue. I can't imagine anything more important to providing a good education than having the right name for a sports team. A word of caution about choosing a name that includes a color that could be construed with low racial sensitivity would be in order.

I really like the Angry Earwigs idea! The logo alone would strike fear in the hearts of all who dare face Milton Middle School in any competitive event!

Tim Schigur probably has no idea about the history behind the name. Most everyone has forgot.... Oh well some of us will never forget!

Is RED WINGS the high school team name? Where I went to middle and high school, they recently changed the entire school district to the high school's mascot and logo. Just a suggestion.
