LAKE GENEVA--The woman killed Saturday afternoon in a boating accident on Geneva Lake in Linn Township has been identified.

Christina A. Tully, 28, of Chicago and formerly of Winter Garden, Fla., was killed when she was struck by a boat.

Tully had been wakeboarding and had fallen off the wakeboard and into the water. She was wearing a dark colored personal floatation device, according to a news release from Geneva Lake police.

A boat driven by John Hutchinson, 64, of Watseka, Ill., struck Tully.

At the time, waves were in excess of two to three feet, according to the police statement.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

I grew up on Geneva Lake. When we moved to the lake in the 70's the largest boat at our large pier of about 30 boats was a 20' boat.
Then the Abbey opened up there harbor. The boats there grew and grew until they could barely make it under the bridge along south shore in Fontana. Some would actually have to disassemble the steering column to get under the bridge.
Over time it became impossible to drive a boat under 20' on the weekends without being swamped by the weekend waves. We had to upgrade our boat for our safety, and the cycle continues. Now I hear you need at least a 25' boat.
It was always sad to hear when someone gets hurt because they were not seen by another boat. Locals learned long ago to avoid the Lake on the weekends.
Limiting access would be tough since so many folks have there boats at there private piers. Limiting size would be tough because then you would have to limit the tour boats.
The only way to fix this now is to go back in time and lower the Abbey Harbor Bridge by 2'. Then the lake could have limited the size of the boats.
Perhaps as gas prices go up no one will be able to afford to drive the bigger boats. Unfortunately the way it will probably work is as gas prices go up only those that can afford the bigger boats will be able to afford the Gas and all others will be driven off.

This is very sad. I wanted to comment on this site for whoever reads this article to know that Christina was such a sweet and caring person. She had a good heart and will be dearly missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the parties involved. What a tragic accident. I hope that this tragedy is not forgotten and helps people to remember how carefull we need to be. It doesn't matter if your on the boat or in the water. Safety is #1.

I agree Wilson, they should definately set limits on how many boats can be launched from the public launches, especially on the weekends. Just to go fishing, you have to go out there and finish before 9am just so you don't get run over.

Having lived and boated here for 15 years I am saddened to hear about this tragedy. Most locals now refuse to boat on weekends due to heavy traffic and the larger boats leaving larger wakes. Wake boarders love the chop but the DNR has to consider setting limits on the shear number of boats or the size of boats as Geneva Lake becomes a more dangerous place on weekends. Speed limits are good but not enough. We've watched as the average boat size here has increased from 20 feet to 25 feet adding to the intensity of the chop on weekends. Those who live and boat here know this was only a matter of time. We have good Police coverage and water safety does a great job as well. It's time for the DNR to step up for everyone's safety and take a serious look at how dangerous weekends are on this beautiful Lake. Launch limits seem a reasonable area to investigate as one option? Maybe the Gazette could have a reporter come out for a Saturday boating trip and see first hand what weekend boating is really like?

Unfortunatley my Wife & I saw the accident happen from approx. 100 yards away from the boat "The Geneva", a Geneva Cruise Line boat, as we were heading into the Black Point Estate dock around 2:00PM.
I went on line after we arrived home today to check the status, only to read this very, very sad news. We pray for all parties involved.
