Child dies in Janesville fire

By Frank Schultz ( Contact )   May 10, 2008 - 10:08 a.m.

JANESVILLE -- A 7-year-old boy is dead, and his 2-year-old brother was flown by helicopter for treatment after a fire on Janesville's west side this morning, the fire department reported.

Firefighters responded shortly after 8 a.m. to the fire at 327 N. Palm St., an older house that was divided into upstairs and downstairs apartments.

Not all details were immediately known, but Deputy Chief Jim Jensen said the boys' father and another brother described as a toddler escaped from the lower apartment, while the boys' grandmother and another person escaped from the upper apartment.

Firefighters from the first unit on the scene carried the two boys out of the burning house and started medical treatment, Jensen said.

A cause of the fire was not immediately known, but an investigator was on the scene, and Jensen promised a thorough investigation.

The Rock Assembly of God has a free clothing give away once a month on Wednesdays. I think it's the third Wednesday of every month. However, You can check the churches online calendar for the days @ www.therockag.org and click on the calendar link or call the church and ask. However, in a case like this all someone has to do is contact the church and we will open the doors. We don't want money, you do not have to be member of the church nor do you have to attend the church to receive clothes it is open to all. They have many other items such as shoes, toys, and a few house hold items. Because we give stuff away we also take donations.

Hi locamama78 - I've tried calling you a few times and it just gives a recording stating you are unavailable and to try back - no option to leave a message - Maybe if you could list some things that they could use and everyone's sizes we can get some donations together - So sorry for your loss - How heartbreaking. You and your family are in our hearts and prayers.

I heard that the Ronald McDonald house is helping them out with a place to stay in Milwaukee while their son is in the hospital. Its a good feeling to see how many people help in this time of need.

We aren't planning the street party til mid June or later. I put a pot with flowers infront of their home, someone else then put a bear with a white rose. The loss of a child is so heartbreaking.

The link does work. You can donate ANY amount to the ARC via their secure site. I just donated $50 to the American Red Cross in Derek's name. While I do not know him, or this family, this tragedy will hopefully remind all of us what really and truly is important in life, and that one never knows when tragedy will strike them. And, to say that I can imagine their pain is a severe understatement; I couldn't imagine especially just before Mother's Day. May you be blessed and guided during these times.

fschultz, the link actually works. It's just the displayed portion that is cut off.

Well, it got cut off again. Sorry. The last letter of that URL should be "g" Or you can try it as I did: Do a Google search for "Red Cross Janesville."

Looks like that URL got cut off. Here's an easier way: Go to http://southcentralwisconsin.redcross.or... and scroll down to click on the "donate now" button on the left side of the page.

The Red Cross was on the scene this morning and has offered assistance to the family, but the family is dealing with the loss of a child, and it's too early for people to be bothering them with offers of assistance, a Red Cross spokeswoman said. Of course, anyone can donate to help the American Red Cross deal with this and future tragedies. If you are moved to do so, you can do it online at:

This is a tragedy, I ran home to hug my 10 year old, then we went to the store and bought six fire alarms and batteries. Our neighbors and I have been talking about having a street party this summer to get to know everyone. I’m thinking now is even a better time to pull together and have people bring donations for this family in need of our support.
