A 15-month-old girl was killed in Newark Township this morning after she was backed over by a vehicle.

Charley M. Brown was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m. at Rockford Memorial Hospital, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office. Investigators believe Dwayne E. Fellenz, 32, Beloit, was backing a vehicle out of the driveway at 9541 W. County H at about 9:40 a.m. when the vehicle backed over the girl, the release said. Orfordville EMS and Beloit paramedics responded, and the girl was flown to Rockford by helicopter.

The sheriff's office doesn't suspect alcohol, excessive speed or reckless driving were factors in the crash, the release said. No citations were issued.

To kate, Ben,the boys, and the rest of the family.I know words cannot even begin to explain the grief, and pain you are all feeling. This is a horrible tragedy.you all have a long path to follow in the days ahead and for life.Right now you all need your family friends and each other to get through this very hard and difficult time,This is the time when people need someone close at all times, but yet needs their space when they want it also.Everyone needs to realize everything happens for a reason, even if the reason never be found. With TIME you will start the healing process. For some of you other people on here you ALL need to realize it was an accident, and accidents can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere, and anyhow. This is not the time people should be pointing the blame. Everyone should be counting their own blessings, and praying for the family to stick together, and make their way through these rough times, not worrying where to place the blame.Kate and Ben our hearts and prayers are with you.

This just breaks my heart. I have a daughter almost the same age. I can't imagine how this family must feel. We must remind ourselves that life is so precious. And we really shouldn't judge or question what happened. Accidents are just that.....accidents. God bless this baby girl and her grieving family.

My heart breaks for this family. I raised 3 boys and thank god that we were spared a tragedy such as this. Children at that age are so quick and so unpredictable, you can do your best to watch and protect them and yet something like this can happen so quickly. I can't count the number of times one of my boys would manage to slip past me. My prayers go out to the family of this little girl.

I just wanted to say that God doesn't take our loved ones away from us to be in heaven, but the bible does say in Ecclesiastes unforseen occurances befalls everyone and there will come a time when we will see our loved ones again in John 5:28,29.My prayers go out to the Browns for this tragedy.

People, people....you can say what you want about "why was the child unsupervised" and "being more careful as the weather is nice now and children are out more". There is not one person in this world who has not made a mistake that could have cost somebody their lives if circumstances had been different. This is just a horrible and tragic accident that i would not wish upon anyones family. My sincere sympathy to all.

Always a parents worse nightmare. My heart goes out to the brown family. I lost my nephew three years ago when he was hit on his trike and it's a long road from here, but with the love and support of family it will be o.k.
It's getting past the blame that takes the longest. We don't know why and you never will, she must have been so precious he needed her upstairs for hugs and kisses.

Charley was a beautiful little girl with a smile that could light up any room. My wife taught one of her brothers in kindergarten a couple years ago. She called me this morning to tell me what happened. I feel so horrible. They absolutely loved that little girl, and I know the boys thought the world of her.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Brown family in this difficult time.

This is a horrendous tragedy and my heart goes out to her family. I just learned of this from a close friend who was Charley's cousin, and she said Charley was the most beautiful and well behaved little girl she has ever seen. There is always danger when automobiles are involved, and it makes you wonder if countless premature deaths and injuries and wars are worth being able to drive a gas powered car to work/school/stores/home. I do not drive and everytime I hear of another tragic accident involving cars operated by sober or drunk drivers it reminds me why I walk to the store. I can't change the world, but I can tell you cars can be used as weapons intentionally and by accident. And it's not really worth the risk. My deepest condolences to all who knew her and loved little charley brown .

FYI - another report I read on this says that a lot of the time it is the "one more goodbye" syndrome that takes place. Where the person is in the car and the child runs outside for one more goodbye and they run behind the vehicle to get to the other side. Or the child somehow climbs out of the car while the person is starting the car and situating themselves, and then ends up behind the vehicle. It's a horrible tragedy that really could be prevented if people were just a little more attentive to thier surroundings, but I guess it's true to say too that accidents DO happen, and that's why they call them accidents, and they almost always suck

That's really sad - I can't imagine how terrible that would be for everyone involved. However, I do enjoy the added comments of

"The sheriff's office doesn't suspect alcohol, excessive speed or reckless driving were factors in the crash, the release said. No citations were issued."

It really makes me wonder how much reckless driving or excessive speed really takes place within a driveway?

That's awful. What I don't get, though, is why was the baby girl laying in the middle of the driveway unsupervised?
