Mayor wants officer to catch speeders
MONONA, Wis. (AP) — If Monona’s mayor has his way, a new police officer will focus only on speeders in this Madison suburb.
Mayor Robb Kahl says the officer’s $77,000 salary and benefits package would be paid mostly through speeding tickets the person would write if the 2009 city budget is approved.
But some are questioning that plan.
The new officer would need to issue about 1,600 tickets at a minimum fine of $48 a piece — almost one an hour.
Monona Police Chief Walter Ostrenga says he doesn’t know if it’s possible to write that many.
The department’s 20 officers issued 416 speeding citations in the first 10 months of 2008.
Kahl says he doesn’t expect it to completely balance, but wants the officer to issue at least three or four tickets a day.

I think what totellthetruth is trying to say is that "speed trap" town/city is being classified in which police make citations in which their general revenue is based on speeding tickets. You could look at this 2 ways. One is that the town could be rid of speeders or penalizing many speeders till they learn to follow the road rules. Or the alternative consequence could be that if a town and or city is branded a "speed trap" town/city, then people may not move into that location. There's been laws put into effect in which towns/cities have been penalized due to the fact that their citation revenue exceeds 50% of the annual budget. See wikipedia info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_trap

Personally I don't mind the people driving like maniacs out there. Just have common sense is to ignore them. If maniacs drive past you flipping the birdie, just wave and smile at them and tell them to have a nice day. Life it too short to be pissed off at other people's business.

all I know is I get really sick and tired of people driving like maniacs and endangering my safety and my kids not to mention their own by speeding. I drive the speed limit and when someone sits on my tail and then passes me on a place like Racine St I have to demand justice. Thank God someone did get nailed for that just last week. There is some divine justice afterall. Seriously folks, going 10 miles over the speed limit is not going to make you get there that much faster. I've clocked people passing me and going approx 10 miles faster and they got off the next off ramp. I arrived at the the same off ramp not even 30 seconds later. And don't forget all of those idiots that pass you and end up next to you at the red light ahead. That's really smart isn't it? They really gained a lot. There are some really bright people there. They deserve to get pulled over.

Devilsadvocate - the idea is not to make money for the city or town. Notice that the article states that the tickets likely would NOT cover the officers complete salary mean the city/town would make zero dollars (with exception to the first year which would be covered in the city budget). Sounds like the mayor simply wants people to drive the speed limit in his town.

Sounds to me they want to be like Rosendale..Wisconsin's Speed Trap Captol. LOL. There if you are even 1 mile over you will get stopped. I know I had a friend who was ticket for just 1 mile over. She had to stop at the local convience store and buy a t-shirt that said something about I got ticked in Rosendale Wisconsin.

Sorry, all this bureaucracy costs money, like it or not, and it too costs lives. Here in Rock County, the municipalities do not have a "do not chase" law, and they're free to chase non-violent offenders through the city, endangering citizens. Just say no to the nanny state!

Enforcement of speeding laws should be done in the interest of highway safety not with the idea of making money for the town, city etc. There is no law that says the police must give you 10 mph over the limit. It's the common sense approach of the officers that gives that leeway. Often politicians, with an idea towards raising money, bump heads with the officer's common sense idea. Be very leery of politicians that want to hire cops to make money.

Hmmm... $48 was a l-o-n-g time ago. Minimum fine for speeding is $30 but then you must add "costs". On top of the $30 there are additional fees that are divided up between the court, the county and the state.
...
And no -- there is no law in Wisconsin that "gives you" 10 over! Speeding is speeding, pure and simple. It is up to the officer's discretion whether or not to cite.

Between 1 and 10 mph over the limit will cost you three points in Wisconsin (unless you get it dismissed).

Most speeding tickets are over $100 so thats only 1 every 2 1/2 hours then, and thats possible.

When did Wisconsin make it law that you are allowed 10 over? Or any state for that matter. It is not a law it is up to the officer as to how much he or she allows you.If you are going over the speed limit by as much as 1 mph they can give a ticket but usually dont. ljs64 I agree with you 100%.

There is no such thing as a speed trap. If you are speeding then your speeding and you should be cited accordingly. Period!
