From the WCLO newsroom:

The number of laid-off workers in Rock County, resulting from employers notifying the state of lay-offs totaling 50-workers or more, is four-times higher this year compared to last.

Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Director Bob Borremans says the number is at a 10-year record high. Borremans says despite the increased volume of service needed at the Rock County Job Center, the staff is keeping up.

The total number of displaced workers in Rock County this year, from these large layoffs, is 5400.

It will get worse! Rumor is Home Depot is closing, sure they say 'we're not', but how many companies say 'well since the cats out of the bag............' I also know a retail store in the same shopping center will be closing begining of the year unless sales drasticlly increase, which it won't.

almeg I don't know about everyone else here but I think AIG ceos should be in prison. And then flogged by the public daily. Things here are not much better than Janesville. I lived in Janesville about 5 years ago and the jobs were scarce then. I drove 70 miles one way to work. How much more crule can it get. Lay offs 2 days before Christmas. My heart is with you all.

bkrkim-Was everyone in Florida just as appalled when AIG came back for the 2nd time, with their hands out, for more $billions$ after they took their executives on lavish retreats with more retreats schedualed for December?

Also it sounds like this is the current number, not including the additional anticipated layoffs from GM soon closing. Frankly I'd be surprised if the number didn't break the 50 year record.

This is not "all unemployed", this is large employers who have announced layoffs. There are many employers who don't even employ 50 people to begin with, so their numbers aren't counted in this figure.

GM employees and everyone affected. Everyone here in Florida was appaled when your head ceos flew to get you money in their private jets. Their arrogent ways just show why our country is failing. Shame on them. They should have taken Greyhound like the rest of the poor people have to.

My guess is that number will go up. And does that just include the unemployed from the auto industry or the all unemployed in Rock County?
