One dead in Janesville crash
JANESVILLE --- One person died and four others were injured after a two-vehicle crash this afternoon at highways 51 and 11.
A westbound pickup truck carrying three people and a southbound car carrying two people collided at about 2:15 p.m., Rock County sheriff’s officials said.
Highway 11 west of Highway 51 remains closed while the wreckage is removed from the road.
Four people were transported to nearby hospitals, officials said.
About 20 firefighters and sheriff’s deputies remained at the scene, cleaning up glass, spilled gasoline and wreckage. A traffic light was knocked over in the crash. The pickup truck remained on its side.
Several onlookers walked over from homes and businesses to view the scene.
John Krafjack, who lives two houses from the intersection, said he heard the collision from inside his house.
“There have been so many accidents down here,” he said. “They won’t slow down. It makes me sick.”
The names of the people in the crash will be withheld until family members are notified.

My prayers will be with both of these families. I can only imagine how traumatic it would be to be either one.
Hannah- It really depends how tall your child is, and, how much he or she weighs. My daughter is 10 years old, but, is 3 inches and 25 pounds bigger than I am. She is the "average" height for an adult plus a bit. So, theoretically, she is safer in the front seat at 10 than I am at 5'4". But, yes, for most children you are definitely correct. It is unbelievable to me to see how many parents have TODDLER seats in the front! It makes me crazy... And, yes, I have approached parents and just offered them a "friendly reminder" about the placement of the seat. Many of the families truly don't know. Unfortunately, SOME of them just don't care.

Maybe its time they put a overpass in there with exits?? Like they did in Madison at Hwy.51 and Milwaukee Street.

My prayers go out to all those involved in this terrible accident. And, even though I have no connection to the accident scene or those involved, I would like to thank all of the people who helped at the crash scene. I was injured in an accident on Interstate-90 last January and will always be extremely grateful for the bystanders who came to my aid.

It is a shame that driving cannot be a relaxing experience anymore. I am one of those who does not trust anyones driving and drive on the defense. It is very sad when accidents like this happen and could have probably been avoided. But, that is why they are called accidents. My condolences to all the families involved.

Isn't the intersection of 51 and 11 also known as the intersection of Centerway and Racine streets?

just to set the record straight the speed limit is posted 45 on hwy 51 in this area. But on 11 it is 55 it is not posted any slower. But either way everyone is in a hurry and most people do 65 or more on hwy 11. maybe if the state put more than one speed limit sign on hwy 11 people would slow down a little but i dought it.

45 miles an hour is the posted speed limit, entering a controlled intersection, you should always expect the lights are going too change. As the traffic radar eye controls flow, speeding or beating the light always not a good choice

I've had it up to my eyeballs with people in Janesville running red lights. What the heck is their problem, other than being in a big hurry.

gabby06, the speed limit is 45 mph through the intersection. Maybe if people paid more attention & obeyed the laws themselves, instead of applying it only to others, there would be fewer accidents.

The same holds true for hwy 11 and county G formally prairie ave. If Prairie turns green look both directions for traffic moving at 60 mph who see the light turn but continue on because they are traveling so fast. I believe that intersection has just as many crashes as 51 and 11. People who travel hwy 11 are traveling on a 4 lane hwy and are not aware there is stop lights and are not paying attention.

I've personally tapped the brakes because of red-light runners at this intersection. It's fine 99% of the time, but it's that 1% that gets you, even in broad daylight.

This intersection is horrible. The speed limit should be reduced to at least 45 mph before getting to this intersection. I've had a couple near misses, when my light just turned green and someone coming west on Hwy 11 can't slow down for the red light. Always look before going though ANY intersection. Just be on alert. A lot of times things can't be avoided, that is why it is an accident. But sometimes they could have been avoided. Just be on alert at all times.
