Rock County's displaced auto workers to receive up to $3.8 million
From the WCLO newsroom:
The US Department of Labor is providing up to $3.8 million to displaced auto workers in Rock County.
Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board Director Bob Borremans says the grant is awarded in phases. The first phase includes $1.6 million to assist second shift workers laid off in July. It will be used to pay for retraining, child care and transportation. He says the grant comes at a good time because people are registering for second semester classes and it will help them pay those costs.
If Rock County utilizes the money in the first phase, they will receive more funding as it is needed.

DETROIT -- General Motors is ending production of its slow-selling mid-sized SUVs on Dec. 23, two years earlier than announced in June.
GM is pulling ahead the closure of its Moraine, Ohio, assembly plant because of market conditions, said GM spokesman Chris Lee. Moraine builds the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer SS, GMC Envoy and Envoy Denali and Saab 9-7X.

I agree... I feel bad for the people that lost thier jobs, because it's not good to lose your job no matter what you were making or what position you held, but I feel like the only thing people think of when they think of Janesville, is GM.

I believe if anyone is laid off either directly or indirectly there is assistance available at the Wisconsin Job Center. I would suggest anyone who works for Allied or any other company who has been laid off to stop by the Job Center and make an appointment with a rep. There is a rather lengthy process, but it's better than absolutely nothing, which is what most will have without it. People need to be realistic though, because not only will they not find jobs that pay as well, but even with the additional education jobs will be tough to find at all. Not trying to be negative, simply truthful and from experience.

This is what donations to politicians get. Those that need the help the most don't get it.

Personally, I would support having all possible resources available to every unemployed worker, but the taxpayers for some reason won't let us do that. There is a limited pool of money and these grants are given to specific cities where specific industries have been hurt. It is in fact getting tough all over and the resources will be spread thin. At the same time many people do not even know what resources they may be eligible for and should pursue all avenues. They may find they can finance training and education some other way. The benefit of a grant like this is that it makes some of that OTHER money available to those people.
.
This isn't the time to turn on each other.

What about the employees at Allied Automotive? I see that Lear and LSI are going to be given $$, what about Allied???? There are TONS of other companies affected by this and they are picking and chosing who is going to get financial help from this and that is just wrong!

I work(ed) there and I agree with most of you. We do recieve a UAW national contract negotiated pay of about 80% until 2011 (that is all GM employees, not just Janesville) if laid off. I don't understand why our government is giving us GM workers special treatment when we already have a tuition assistance program through the UAW. The Lear and LSI people should be the ones recieving this grant. I do feel for you guys and everyone else undergoing a layoff and I agree it's not fair. Here's an idea, call Sheridan up and ask him why this is? For most of you he's your representitive. Ask who's idea it was to push this, and if he had a part, wouldn't it be a conflict of interest and unfair to the others in his district?

Always has been about GM, always will be. The city put all their eggs in this basket and now it's falling apart. There are plenty of other large corporations in this town that don't get the same treatment.

Helping these people out? These people are recieving 90% of there pay for two years. If I were to lose my job tomorrow I would recieve unemployment for 26 weeks-taxed and no state grant money to help with education, child care and transpotation. It is not only GM and their suppliers that are hit hard, it is others in the area that will not recieve any help at all. This is the arguement most have with the "bailout" of what we are told is the only reason Janesville exists.

People are receiving these benefits because our good old government let a lot of our work go overseas. Its not just because of a small layoff. This is huge for the economy. It was good paying jobs that many used to help out others. People need to wake up in the community and start helping people out. Instead all I hear is the darn GM workers. We will soon find out how much these darn GM workers help. A lot of people will suffer and times are getting hard. Moral of the story is pull together at hard times and help people going through these tough times and someday you to will need help. Thanks I Don't work at GM

Don't the laid off GM workers get supplemental pay that amounts to about 80% of their working wages, for up to two years? Also, I agree, what about the suppliers?

Wow! Let's go a little further and ask about the assistance given to the local tradesmen that have seen work in the area dwindle and them being without work. GM center of the Rock county universe.

Yes, what about all the other companies that are laying off because they make parts for GM? Hardly seems fair since a lot of them did not make as much at GM employees.
