Candy recalled: White Rabbit may be toxic
Wisconsin consumers are being warned to throw out White Rabbit candy, a Chinese product that may contain the dangerous chemical melamine and that has been found in three cities in the state.
The imported product has been found in Eau Claire, Sheboygan and Wausau, as well as in a Wisconsin grocery distribution center, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
It has been found in grocery stores as well as Asian specialty markets, and may have been sold in stores in other locations prior to the recall, so consumers may have it in their homes, the department said.
To date, no illnesses associated with the candy have been reported in Wisconsin or elsewhere in the United States, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
White Rabbit comes in a variety of flavors. The creamy candy is sold in 8- and 16-ounce bags. Red bean, coffee, corn, lychee, mango, strawberry and assortments are sold in 7-ounce bags. All have a white rabbit design on the front.
The department said the candy can be thrown out or returned to the store for a refund. Questions about the product can be directed to QFCO Inc., the Burlingame, Calif., company that imported and distributed the candy, at (650) 697-6633.
QFCO recalled the candy on Sept. 26, although Wisconsin was not on the original recall list. For more information about the melamine contamination situation, go to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Web site. —————

Food from other countries isn't any cheaper to grow than in the US, it's just that you don't see some of the costs. These are called "externalized costs". They're the costs a producer doesn't pay when operating in another country. Some externalized costs are lack of environmental protection, and cheap labor. Of course, the labor is cheap because they sleep on dirt floors, don't own cars, and have never seen a doctor in their life. We need to raise (and lower) everybody to the same level so we're all playing the same game.

Isn't it nice, too, how fuel is so plentiful and cheap as to ship FOOD from these other countries?

Not to belabor the point but Chinese food products have no safety standards....they have poisoned our pets, gave us toxic toys for our kids, poisoned our medications, and now our food. Screw this global economy...let us make our own food and toys and cars. At least we will have some control over the ingredients and I doubt we will make our baby formula with melemine or antifreeze in our toothpaste. My grandpa preached for years to buy American and as a younger man I did not listen, man I wish he were here now.
