Poll: Obama's lead widens over McCain in Wis.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) Barack Obama's commanding 17-point lead in Wisconsin over John McCain shown in a new independent poll released Tuesday is the largest he's ever enjoyed in the state.
The Quinnipiac University poll also shows large leads for Obama in Minnesota, Colorado and Michigan with the election just three weeks away. One poll was done before last week's debate and another was done after.
Post-debate Obama was up 9 points in Colorado, 16 points in Michigan, 11 points in Minnesota and 17 in Wisconsin.
"Those margins may be insurmountable barring a reversal that has never been seen before in the modern era in which polling monitors public opinion throughout the campaign," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the university's polling institute. "Any realistic chance of McCain coming from behind depends on scoring a knockout in this week's last debate. But given that he has been judged by the electorate to have lost both of the previous face-offs, that would seem to be a very tall order."
The final presidential debate is Wednesday.
The findings come on the heels of another independent poll released last week that showed Obama ahead by 10 points in Wisconsin.
Particularly troubling for McCain is that Obama leads 52 percent to 36 percent among Wisconsin's independent voters, who were expected to determine the outcome of the race in this hotly contested state. Obama also leads among white voters, men, women, blue collar voters, and Catholics.
The flailing national economy is also benefiting Obama with 55 percent of those polled saying it is the biggest issue in the race. And a majority say Obama is better able to deal with it — 53 percent to 32 percent.
"The only possible bright spot for Senator McCain — and you would need Mary Poppins to find it in these numbers — is that he is holding roughly the same portion of the Republican vote," Brown said.
The polls, conducted in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com, were done between Oct. 3 and Oct. 7. The pre-debate poll in Wisconsin of 1,081 randomly selected likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The post-debate poll of 1,201 likely voters had a 2.8 percentage point margin of error.

Cook County Illinois he couldn't even clean that County up while he was a senator. What's the unemployment there something like 9.5%. Obama is ALL TALK. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

jp53545,
The reason we'll be in the same boat is the integrity issue. You can put a person of the utmost integrity in a position of power and they'll get eaten alive in the evil den of the U.S. govt. More people of integrity need to step up and have the courage to stand for what's right and do the right things. Too many people are under the impression that Geo. Bush or whoever can just jump in and "fix it" just like that! People can say what they want about Bush, I'm not for or against him, but, when all the smoke clears, we'll find he wasn't as bad as people have labeled him. The corporate driven media influences the masses which means the people of this country are getting a totally biased opinion of things happening. It still boils down to integrity. Obama has a track record a mile long of character flaws, yet people are willing to look the other way for the sake of change! Give me a break.

Higher taxes doesn't neccesarily mean less money for. If the government continually runs at a deficity the price of goods and services rises. I bought my house 8 years ago, at the end of the clinton adminstration, when I was 20 years old, I made 1200 dollars a month, and got by easily. 8 years later I make almost double that and am literally living paycheck to paycheck. We are paying the lowest taxes since WWII and look where our econonmy is. Trickle down economics simply doesn't work. If they rich actually spent their money, maybe it would, but the rich didn't get rich by spending wildly.

I just want to clarify that I'm as middle class as it gets and yes I drive a GM gas hog truck (I just wanted to throw that in because that's all that's discussed on this site and the World is coming to an end because they're in trouble) I make a decent living, but I'm far from being where some of the below posts say that I am. As a matter of fact, not even close to what the posts say. I just worked real hard to get where I'm at and that's the choice I made in life. I have a real problem with feeling sorry for those who chose not to do that and I don't owe them anything.

Zoom: How can you have a tax cut when you don't pay any taxes!? I know these folks are working, and 40% of the 95% are currently paying NO income tax, NONE notta. They will be getting a BIGGER check from the government, now I just want to know how getting more from the government when you pay NOTHING is a tax cut?
According to the Tax Foundation, the top 1% of wage-earners in this country pays nearly 40% of the burden (an 11% INCREASE over 1999, when WHO was President? Oh that's right...Bill Clinton). Not fair? Well, you may be saying, 'that's because they have ALL the wealth!' Wrong again. The top 1% of earners account for just 21% of the total adjusted gross income. Hmm. Come to think of it...you're RIGHT! That really isn't fair. They're paying DOUBLE what they should be. By the way, the top 10% of earners pay 70% of the load. When you get all the way down to the top 50% of earners, they account for 96.4% of the entire tax burden. The next 10% pays 3.6%. And the bottom 40% of wage earners...pay NOTHING.

Zoom my friend you really need to listen to Obama's words more clearly. You do realize that when the small business owners no longer have money to give his programs he will next come to anyone that owns property, and ask them to just pay a little more to help those that decided early on to not work hard, and purchase a home. The writing is on the wall.

Don't believe polert's misinformation.
Obama has never said his tax credit would go to people not willing to work. The middle class tax credit is for 95% of WORKING families or individuals.
Obama’s Comprehensive Tax Policy Plan for America will:
Cut taxes for 95 percent of WORKERS and their families with a tax cut of $500 for WORKERS or $1,000 for WORKING couples.
Provide generous tax cuts for low- and middle-income seniors, homeowners, the uninsured, and families sending a child to college or looking to save and accumulate wealth.
Eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses, cut corporate taxes for firms that invest and create jobs in the United States, and provide tax credits to reduce the cost of healthcare and to reward investments in innovation.
Dramatically simplify taxes by consolidating existing tax credits, eliminating the need for millions of senior citizens to file tax forms, and enabling as many as 40 million middle-class Americans to do their own taxes in less than five minutes without an accountant.

I agree that these numbers are high. I'd say around %10 for Obama. The reality for McCain is that he's going to have to pull out of Wisconsin. Face the fact, he's going to lose it. Same deal with Iowa. He needs to get his campaign and it's resources to Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Without those states, he's done. Actually, if he's really interested in helping the economy, he should suspend his campaign now, concede to Obama, and distribute the campaign money to those who are losing their homes, etc.

Anyone can say that a particular tax plan is better for them individually. The question is which tax plan is better for the United States of America. At a time when we have a national debt exceeding one trillion dollars, we have to start all over again where Bill Clinton was in 1993 designing a budget that will create a surplus that we can use to pay down that debt. Otherwise we are "taxing our grandchildren" instead of ourselves.
.
I believe that Ronald Reagan made wide use of that phrase. But it took a Democrat to balance the budget, and the first Republican after him to break it again. History shows who is better prepared to lead.

polert- that's the whole point of liberalism and Obama, keep people on welfare so they can keep promising them more and more without actually having to change their situation. Reward the lazy, tax the hard workers. They think it's fair to spread the wealth.

Another great post! The free enterprise system is designed to reward the people that are willing to step up and make something of themselves. The problems we're facing are these programs that the govt. implements that reward the unwilling and lazy people and govt. is playing God and deciding that these rewards should come out of the pockets of those who have stepped out and made something from nothing and busted their humps to create their wealth. In other words, mediocrity is encouraged and ambition and fortitude are being, discouraged! We, the people are our own worse enemy too. We stand by and watch this all happen. We don't have people of moral authority in office who not only understand what's going on but make the necessary changes to better our society. Leaders of moral authority stand for what's right regardless of the consequences. Those leaders I'm speaking of exist out there, but don't have the backing by others with the same integrity to actually have their voice heard by the masses because they don't control the media sources. It's so true, "control the media, control the people"........THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING! Hitler almost took over the Western World doing that!

I seen in a report that in a meet/greet line in Ohio a plumber/owner operator ask Obama why Obama want to raise his taxes. Obama replied I want to spread the wealth. Which means take from those that work, and give to those that do not. To many of us that is take for us, and give to welfare.

Anyone read CNN today.. Long report on how they think that the polls are unfairly supportive of Obama. CNN itself says the polls can be swayed up to 20% due to people not accurately reporting who they will vote or who they have voted for due to race issues. It is not over until every vote is counted, and counted twice in Illinois...

CIM: Do you have an MP3 player, a TV, or some other luxury? Maybe you should be forced to give that to a poor person, right? I mean why should you be able to have all the fun stuff and have the poor suffer without? When will enough be enough? Why do you want to TAKE from on person who probably worked hard to get to 250k a year, and probably puts in long hours to do so. Also the FACTS are that there is not enough money with the wealthy to fund the "tax cuts" (wealth redistribution) to the "middle class" The tax system is for revenue, not for redistribution of wealth. if FAIRNESS is what you want, and not taking from others more fortunate, then a flat tax with NO loopholes would make more sense. If you do indeed think I am still crazy keep in mind that 40% of the 95% that Obama talks of already pay NO taxes, and will just get more money from the goverment, how is that fair? btw I am WAY under 250k a year, and way under 100k, so please don't assume I am just not wanting to give up my money because I am one of the 250k + people.

Either way, Obama, or McCain, America looses. At critical times of the economy, the less the government intervenes the better. Remember back 6 months ago, when BOTH Republicans and Democrats thought that all we needed was a stimulus check that would solve it, so Billions were spent, and we are still in this situation. 82 billion to AIG, and now they need another 27 Billion? Companies that do risky practices should not be "bailed out". Americans who are deep in debt trying to "keep up with the Jones" shouldn't be bailed out either. Personal responsibility, and consequences is the only way out. We tried all this government intervention before... it's called the Great Depression, and government sure fixed that... oh wait it lasted years (oh and they also raised taxes which killed the fragile economy, and threw us further into the depression... please note Obama's wealth redistribution plan or has he calls it "tax cuts")
