lulu I wish they would do that. Also wish they would treat people who killed others DUI at least as 2nd deg homicide. Really isnt any different than shooting a gun randomly into a building.

wow that is sickening. It is just wrong to treat drunken driving as a traffic ticket. It should be treated as what it is: attempted murder!

The Milwaukee Journal has begun a series on drinking in Wisconsin.
http://www.jsonline.com/
There are a lot of graphics. Its not a felony in our state until your 5th conviction. Some stats from there:
Here are the sobering facts:
• Wisconsin has led every state in its percentage of drinkers since at least 1995.
• Wisconsin has led the nation in binge drinking every year since at least 1995.
• Wisconsin is the only state in the country that treats first-offense drunken driving as a traffic ticket.
• More than one-third of the people convicted of drunken driving in Wisconsin last year were repeat offenders.
In Rock County, from 2003-2007, with our population at 159,623 people, we have 203 liquor licenses; 5,969 OWI convictions; 51 fatal drunk driving crashes.

if I'm not mistaken, isn't it a manditory 5 years prison for the 5th offense now, plus a very hefty fine??

I wonder what the DWI stats are for cities like New York, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta? Cities with modern Rapid transit that is 24/7 and easy to use?

After all these decades, what is the answer to drunk drivers? There are or never will be enough police to catch them all, and people will continue to die. All the advertising and public adds on the dangers of drunk driving will never stop the problem. This state makes alot of money off of alcohol sales and spends alot of it on catching alcohol drivers...make sense? The ones that pay the ultimate price are the innocent victims, the youth, and the dead peoples family, kids etc...jmo

Simple.
1st dui, $1500 fine, 1yr revoked. 364 in jail. Mandatory AA.
2nd dui $10,000 fine, 5 yrs revoled 364 jail, 5 yrs prob w/o alcohol.
3rd dui $100,000 fine, banned from driving for life 5 yrs prison. 25 yrs probation.
Any more just keep adding zeros to the fine.
Ah screw that. Just break their legs. Drunks have a hard time driving with 2 busted legs.

Wow. No good. Let's see, we have people sitting in jail for hmmmmmm....not paying child support, stealing and other less serious crimes, but these idiots get off with a few months and a ticket. Eye for an Eye. I am totally for that, the punishment should equal the severity of the crime. Drunk drivers who get into accidents are attempted murderers and should be prosecuted as such! Quit wasting so much time on the "easy" gets. Put more effort into keeping the habituals locked up.

A lot of these kids are being brought up by parents that like to have a drink. Nothing wrong with that except these parents are having parties while kids are there or taking them to parties and bars instead of getting baby sitters. Kids think that this is ok since mom and / or dad do it. Quit taking kids to the bar or parties! It is not quality time.

I've always liked the proposal that when you're 18 you should get to choose one: drinking or driving.

No cure but it would possibly lower the drunk drivers if we actually gave them real punishments. 6 months for your 4th OWI?? 6 months is nothing!! My uncle got 3 and he just had to be on the bracelet for 3 months, pretty hefty fine I guess but still it's not nearly enough to deter people from driving!

Just an ordinary day in the state of Wisconsin. How many OWIs will these two get before killing someone, 8,9,10? One guy is up to 11. Does anyone know what the record is? WI should change the state motto to "WI- get as many DUIs as you want but you'll never do jail time"
