RHINELANDER — A Rhinelander woman is being extra cautious going out in her yard after a bear attacked one of her dogs last week.

Lori Oelrich said the bear came out of the shadows and attacked her dog, Nick. Her other dog, Copper, wasn't hurt, but Nick had wounds to the neck and hind end.

She said every time Nick tried to come toward her, the bear would grab him again.

She's bought a bell and fog horn and expects to use them for some time to scare bears away.

Wildlife experts say bears are looking for food at this time of year and will go for bird seed at a feeder or garbage in cans.

They recommend holding off on feeding birds until mid-November when most bears have gone into hibernation.

It's a good thing the bear didn't go after her kitty.

cabby05- He didn't say to shoot the bears but to use the noise of a discharging shot gun to scare away the bears.

woodsman- that is a good idea! I lived in the middle of no where for 4 years and would hear stories of people shooting bears with real shot gun shells because it doesnt kill them! while it doesn't kill them the wounds get infected really bad its awful!

I lived at the edge of the forest in the U.P. for a time, pretty wild up their. Had cougars running the farmers fence lines, wolf, bear.Had a pole that had claw marks on it,and teeth marks, was not a very good feeling outside at night. But anyway, this lady can go to the DNR station to get some shot gun shells, for free, they are like a fireworks when discharged, big noise, work real good to scare the bears away.
