Marshall Middle School has been opened after a possibly suicidal subject in the neighborhood was taken into custody, Capt. Dan Davis with the Janesville Police Department said.

The school had been put on lockdown after 3 p.m. as police dealt with the subject. The subject was apprehended without incident, Davis said.

Traffic in the neighborhood has also been reopened, he said.

ame8736- Yes, there is an elementary school over there, it is Monroe. Most of the kids and parents were already away from Monroe since school is dismissed at 3:00 and all of this was happening around 3:15. However, there were still some kids inside the school for the afterschool program. Because of the lockdown, parents were not allowed in the building to pick up their children. Some chose to stay outside in their vehicle and wait, probably because they didn't know what was happening down the road, and some of the parents went home and waited for a phone call that it was ok to come get their child.

ame,
monroe elementary had already let students out for the day...their day ends at 3:00 pm. Any staff and students left in the building (basics children, etc) were put in lockdown as well. Many parents called marshall and were told their students were safe and in a lockdown. Any parents approaching the building, were also put into lockdown.

Dawger? I think the people who have kids in those schools are glad the cops did what they did. Think about it... what would you have the police do?

People like Dawger will always cast negativity. Makes no sense to get worked up over that. Hope you never need help Dawger or have kids that are in harms way.

This mockery is certainly out of place. The police and schools acted professionally and quickly under their public safety responsibilities. It was resolved quickly and without harm to anyone, not the least the individual involved.
.
I understand that Chief Mahan said at the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event that domestic violence incidents, of which this is one type, comprise around 1000 calls annually. It's very dangerous for the police to intervene -- in some ways more so than with criminals -- and yet they do it every day without people noticing.

1919eternal: glad to see you voice your thoughts, but, again, mental health issues are EXTREMELY serious. You making light of it allows the stigma remain. Shame on you!

DAWGER:
how about you get over yourself and realize the severity of the situation! Mental illness is a VERY serious issue that is NOT to be taken so lightly! I pray that someday soon you understand this and realize the severity of the case.

Praises to the JPD in controlling the situation when no one knows what is going on in these types of situations!

Let's also not forget the numerous children who live in, or near, these apartment buildings. As a parent taking part in the lockdown, I was very happy at the way the school handled the situation.

Monroe was in fact in a lockdown. There were still kids in the school for the afterschool program.

dawger- This could have been a very serious situation and I believe that the Janesville police handled it very well. Had the "suicidal person" gotten out near the schools it could have been a very dangerous situation for both kids and parents.

I think they got some kids back into Monroe and were locked down, this happened at a very bad time (not that any time would be good) They did the best they could!

danias--if you refer to the original news posting, Monroe Elem had already dismissed when the lockdown order was given. Elem generally lets out earlier than middle schools.
