Woman banned from senior center sues
MONROE, Wis. (AP) — An elderly Monroe woman banned from a senior center for abusive language during a card party has filed a federal lawsuit claiming her free speech rights were violated.
Seventy-eight-year-old Edith Milestone wants a jury to decide the matter.
Behring Senior Center director Tammy Derrickson says Milestone didn't treat others with respect, used abusive language and was physically threatening.
Derrickson told Milestone in a letter that her conduct during an October card party and other incidents meant she was no longer welcome at the city-owned senior center.
Derrickson says all seniors who participate in the center's program are required to follow a code of conduct.
Milestone's lawsuit asks that the conduct code be thrown out and that she be awarded compensation, which was not specified.

Hey, my father is a crochety old man, and knows it full well. When he was put in a nursing home for a brief period due to hip surgery, they couldn't wait for him to leave.
When older women were wandering the halls, asking for their husbands, he would tell them their husbands died.
He told the nurses that he would stop using the toilet unless they gave him a discount, because his roommate kept messing the bed and was charged the same rate he was.
He was able to use his walker and get to the dining room before other residents, and would laugh maniacally at them.
Sometimes these people have all their faculties, they are just bored, bitter, angry, or whatever.
Now dad is home with my mother, who is faking deafness so she doesn't have to put up with him.

Two things I learned about Mr. Keith today: 1) He makes too many assumptions. 2) He was obviously not a fan of, “All in the Family”.

think this would have been an excellent opportunity for mediation. In fact, I think it would have been a good opportunity for some high school students volunteer to learn about mediation and give it a try in this case. Surely, something else could have been worked out. I know my grandmother was a cranky bird, who was known to get mad when she lost, but she could be reasoned with. Maybe they could have tried to come to some agreement, even banning her from certain games.

what exactly should be mediated, a woman who spoke her mind? What in the world would high school students do?

Some of you need to stop acting as though elderly are complete helpless and crazy...Maybe this woman just got really damn mad and said her piece.. I am sure people of all ages do that from time to time, and even in an inappropriate setting. So give her a break, I mean my grandma at 83 was sharp as a whip and could have kicked just about anyones butt..She HATED the stigma thrown at her by society- dubbed as the "senior citizen"- old, helpless and crazy... TRUST ME, she was far from it! Maybe Edith has a valid complaint and just wants to be heard..So let her.

browntown96. You know you are right; but the thing is we are all getting older at the same rate. I've noticed those same character traits you mentioned in most every age group.
As for me I enjoy being older (if 62 years fits that discription), its such a carefree age. I meet new friends every day, take long walks in the morning looking for where I parked my car, I can put a 'reverse mortgage' on my home and hang my kids with any remaining financial responsibility when I go, I have a choice of several male enhancement drugs to choose from, not to mention hair restoral, stomach stapling, and tooth replacement. Heck I can look better now than I did at 30 yrs.
Yes, 62 is such a good age.....now what button do I push to get this thing to send!

I agree, if her behavior was disturbing and aggressive, it has no place in ANY social environment. Regardless of age, no one has a right to make others feel threatened or uncomfortable, for the most part.
Seriously, perhaps she has "issues" that need to be addressed... Hopefully its not just a bunch of other seniors that are very subdued... made them "uncomfortable" for no legitimate reason. We weren't there so we don't know what happened.
Maybe she needs a more exhilarating atmosphere, where others are more tolerant...

People get older, they get stranger/more opinionated and aggessive. And not in a good way. I have been around older people most of my life and they do change...unfortunately, not for the better. When elderly people lose it, they should still have to abide by the same rules...ie-codes as everyone else. Regardless.

Well stated, Bob! We all get older, but I plan to go down swinging! As for the rudeness, manners are manners. Majority should rule as we still do live in a democracy. If the larger group finds her offensive, then she shouldn't be allowed in. It's the only fair way to settle a dispute like this.

I don't know exactly what was said or done to get this woman kicked out of the senior center, but I do think that she should have to be just as accountable for her actions/words as everyone else. Can't we all just get along? :)

These conversation, even with freedom of speech, is very offensive. Do you all treat your own parents and grandparents like this? No wonder there are so many in nursing homes, etc. that have no family contact. This is a poor sign of the times. All that your parents and family did you raise you and then you treat them like crap?

Don't know this woman - never heard of her - don't know what her gig is. But, this comment thread has evoked an interesting tone in comments unrealated to her case. That being, an underlying negative timbre against what I guess we are assuming are old people - "stifle yourself [Edith];" "making the hand basket[s];" "elderbary cocktail juice went bad;" "they have Alzheimer's;" "stay home with your prune juice!!!;" "needs her meds checked."
Yikes people! This might be a small piece of the explanation puzzle as to why older workers were being thrown under the employment bus long before the economy tanked.
I think I will just start never identifying my real age any more in this current culture - it is a lost cause.

I can find only two lawsuits filed under that name in the last 19 years, one for eviction and one for, I'm guessing, the cost of a classified ad, oddly enough. There have been other lawsuits against that name including foreclosure. As for the long, long, long history, it must predate the CCAP system.

Edith - don't be such a sore loser.
This is unbelievable. It's why our court systems are so backed up.
Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing we all have. However, code of conduct goes without saying. You sure can't go into work and swear like a trooper claiming your "freedom of speech".
If you can't control your potty mouth stay home with your prune juice!!!

I tell ya... this generation....the world is going to heck in a hand basket and Edith can't even be part of making the hand basket because they won't let her in the senior center!!
Throw out the conduct code? I think Edith AND her attorney need a competency hearing before this can go to a jury!
