MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Land O'Lakes Inc. plans to close its butter manufacturing plant in Madison and lay off 120 employees.

The cooperative based in St. Paul, Minn., said Madison Dairy would close within 60 days because it no longer is economically feasible to operate.

Spokeswoman Jeanne Forbis said other Land O'Lakes plants around the country would make up for the lost production. She said layoffs are expected to start in mid-May and the plant would close in mid-June, although parts might close earlier.

Casey Langan of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau said the shutdown is the type of thing the industry has tried to avoid, because it reduces infrastructure at the same time the state's milk production has grown, with cheese plants running at capacity.

Here is direct result of health hype that butter is bad for you...butter digests in your system that oil smear doesn't digest. If it runs though you with no digestion it isn't healthy period.

It has taken years for things to get this bad. Some money from the Fed isn't going to be an immediate fix.

WI is not a business friendly state. There will be more closings when the gov raises taxes on corporations.

It's about selling products, in this case butter.
If you don't buy their product, they will close.
Same thing for many industries.
The buggy-whip manufacturers went away too.

unknown, the stimulus is designed to get money into the economy so that more companies won't close their doors. But it can't prevent all layoffs. This is already the deepest recession since WWII.
