Human services reviewing toddler's overdose
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Dane County Department of Human Services is reviewing the overdose death of a 3-year-old girl at a YWCA homeless shelter in Madison.
The department contracts with the YWCA to provide shelter for homeless women. Amaya Walker was living at the shelter with her grandmother, who has been charged with child neglect resulting in death.
Human Services director Lynn Green says her department if following up with the Y about possible risks.
YWCA chief executive Eileen Mershart says if they had any information that Amaya's welfare was at risk, they would have reported it.
A criminal complaint says the child ingested oxycodone and Valium and that Walker had a prescription for the oxycodone.

How sad for this poor baby. Why does this continue to happen? Irresponsible "adults" left in charge of children. How many more little ones have to die at the hands of the "caregiver" (and I use the term VERY loosely!!!)
I haven't heard anything about the biological mother here... Perhaps she was even worse? But how could that be? This child is gone, and her GRANDMOTHER killed her!
I'm just sick over this!

WSJ report

.
The grandmother claims she left her meds out, but there are some indications of substandard care. There are also questions about the extent to which the YWCA was obligated to intervene given the grandmother's false claim she was taking the girl to the hospital.

My thoughts exactly. I mean really, who in their right mind would give drugs like that to a 3 year old; much less any child.
