Dogs search Janesville schools

JANESVILLE -- Drug-sniffing dogs searched two Janesville middle schools Friday morning as part of an ongoing effort.

No drugs were found during the search by two Janesville Police Department dogs, said district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller.

Students at Edison and Franklin middle schools were in a "soft lockdown" as the dogs were led past lockers, Miller said. During a soft lockdown, students must remain in their classrooms, but instruction continues as usual.

The dogs did react a few times at each of the schools, but locker searches turned up no drugs, Miller said.

The district has been inviting police to search the high and middle schools with drug dogs for more than three years.

ledzep, you have that right to take your children elsewhere. In Russia, there less freedoms than in the USA. Be grateful that the district, the police, social services, and your neighbors are trying to protect YOUR children. By you stating that, it sounds like you are sending drugs with your kids to school. Way to open yourself up to an investigation.

Just in my professional opinion.

Janesville H.S doesn't have squat compared to what Badger H.S. has from what I've been told!
The need to do a surprise attack like that a few times a year in that school!

zep77... ""them dogs" AIN'T dangerous! They are TRAINED to detect illegal substances. If that makes you upset, PLEEEEAAAASSSEEE, take your kids out of this school district. I think most parents would agree, if you are uncomfortable with such a search, leave,... go for it! IMHO.

fbcoach..."But imagine the outrage when a german shepard sniffs a kid and gets a reaction. Parents would be up in arms, and I don't think I could blame them". If a parent is "up in arms" about their child being "scented", or getting a reaction to this search, maybe that parent needs to take a good long look at what their child is doing; with whom, and where. Yes... we ALL have our "rights", but if these kids are in school, they should not be worrying about "getting sniffed"! If they are worried about it, it's time for some help PERIOD!

paytomuchtax (great name by the way) I teach at Craig HS and TEACHERS don't know when it is going to happen. Students certainly don't know a head of time. Teacher's are typically told an hour or so before it is going to happen. I am 99% certain the kids don't know a head of time.

Do kids know the dogs won't come in the classrooms? Yes, so they may keep it on them. But imagine the outrage when a german shepard sniffs a kid and gets a reaction. Parents would be up in arms, and I don't think I could blame them.

Heck, walk the dogs through neighborhoods, major parking lots such as at the mall, through fast-food restaurants, church gatherings, bars, gas stations, parks, etc., ... we might be surprised at what gets detected.

The dogs were at the Brodhead schools on Thursday morning. They do both the lockers and parking lots. It would be great to have them go thru the classrooms too! They come usually twice a year-unannounced. I think its a great tool for the districts to use.

Perhaps not searching Marshall was a logistics thing, the big problem is that kids are abusing drugs they get from their parents prescriptions, which the dogs may not hit on. I think gun and drug sniffing dogs should be more prominent, it cold prevent a lot of problems we see in the media and right here in Janesville.
As far as treating our kids like criminals.... some of them are criminals and these measures are protecting the majority that are good kids, regardless of what their address is. Yes i have a child at Marshall and yes i support the use of dogs and what ever else will make the schools safe!

I think they should do the vehicles in the student parking lots too...maybe some kids think it is safer to keep these types of items in their vehicles (not on their person) while in school?

Well they should check Marshall too. Just its on the Eastside aka "RICH" side of town does not mean that people don't do drugs on that side of town. In fact, they could probably afford drugs more. I also think that the drug problem is an even more big of an issue at the High Schools then the middle school.

These dogs should be used every single day until this whole drug issue is under control .

biggirl: I think it is a small price to pay (having the lockers, bags, etc) searched on school property if it saves even 1 life. Read the headlines.....kids are dying from drug use/abuse.
paytomuchtax: I agree that searches should be unannounced. They would find sooo much more if that were true.

I just checked with district spokeswoman Sheryl Miller, and she is not aware of any drug-dog search of Marshall recently. She said Marshall is one of the schools they're considering searching yet this school year.

FYI, they did a search of Marshall schools last week so they are not just focusing on one side of the town.

biggirl-Why does it come to no surprise that once again, you are against anything related to law enforcement? Treating our kids like criminals? Some of them are. Where the hell have you been lately? It's called protecting our kids. Wake up!

You must have been a real joy in class NVgrf. Did you teach those farmers anything? *****
(I am being sarcastic on the whole Craig/Parker rich kid farmer debate. I didn't grow up here, think its ridiculous and find it even more appalling a former teacher would make the comment he did below)

"as part of an ongoing effort" -- What does that mean? I'm sorry, but I don't think we should treat our children like criminals. What's next -- strip searching them?

The problem is the kids know ahead of time about the searches. My son was in Craig High School four years he said they know ahead of time and the stuff was put in to girls purse's. Why because they werent required to be put out to be checked. He said if they had checked they would have found a ton of stuff. They say the kids are not told before hand but he said they know a day ahead of time everytime because it was leaked. I bet it was to make sure nothing was found so we can keep the public thinking Janesville's kids are goodie to shoes. Read the articales on heroin wake up shools and police do a search when there is no notice and check hand bags and purses. You will be suprised at what you find!!!

NVgrf yes kids at Marshall do dope to. What you think because Marshall is on the "rich" side of town kids don't use drugs?? How dumb are you? Every city, EVERY part of town, AND EVERY school has issues with drugs. The only difference is money buys better drugs.
