Madison police cracking down on cyclists
MADISON — Officials in Madison are clamping down on traffic violations — among cyclists. Ten cyclists were cited for running a red light on their bikes Wednesday, the kickoff day for a federally funded bicycle safety initiative.
One was Brittany Jordt. She was pulled over by a bike cop and given a ticket for more than $63.
This is the first time in recent memory the Madison Police Department has targeted biker infractions. Sgt. Eric Tripke says police want to see cyclists stopping for lights and obeying traffic laws.
Downtown bikers can expect to be under scrutiny in coming weeks. Officers will be conducting another enforcement action this week and another five or six in September, after students start the school year.

Cookiedough, you are a threat to society and should be locked up if you aren't just making jokes here. If you really believe what you are writing, then you need education. Start here: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehi...

Panamared, if you read my article, it was meant for the country roads, not city roads. They may have a right to drive on the shoulder of the road, but not over or even on the white line on the shoulder of the road. Common sense for cyclists should be to be to the right of the white line closer to the shoulder of the road. I blare my horn if they are riding double or on the white line because if a car is coming the other way, I should not have to slow down or speed up to avoid a collision due to a cyclists on the country roads over too far on the road. City limits I really don't have a problem with as long as the cyclists are not hogging the middle of the road forever. Read and comprehend before you make me out to be the bad guy.

There is another facet to this topic that many people are not aware of.
Automated stop lights do not change for bicycles, and motorcycles.
What a person in a car may see as a biker running a red light, is sometimes a "stop, look, proceed" because the light won't cycle until something large triggers it, like your 4000lb gas hog car, or 6000lb Bubba truck.

If bicyclists riding the roads are subject to the same traffic laws and enforcement as motorized vehicles, such as those driving cars, why shouldn't the bicyclists simply ride in the road? There is no minimum speed limit on city streets. If the police want to ticket cyclists for failure to signal turns and coasting through stop signs then it must be lawful to ride our bikes in the road. Of course there are always those idiots who think that because they are in a car they have special privileges which means they don't have to share the road with anything smaller or slower than what they are driving. That includes morons who can't slow down for anything, for fear it will take them an extra 5 seconds of driving time. For them, well they can watch me pedal my a** all over town.
I have just as much right to the road as you do, cookiedough. The State also spends millions on Interstates and bikes are not allowed on them. Go drive there if you don't want to share the road with cyclists.

This is nothing new. When I was in school there (20 years ago) they had a whole fleet of "bike cops" that did nothing but enforce traffic laws for bicycles.

This is hilarious. Some of the same posters here that want helmets on motorcyclists, seat belt laws, and government health care don't want to enforce traffic laws to protect the lives of bicyclists. I guess the nanny state does have limits in the eyes of the caring...

Now we need enforcement on PB between belleville and paoli and 92 from New Glarus to Mount Vernon/Horeb (those bicyclists especially on 92 do not belong on this curvy and very dangerous non-shoulder road) to get the fancy bicyclists off the county country roads from NOT driving on the white line riding side by side. If a car is coming my way, there is no room to get over and I only miss them by less than a foot with my side mirror. I think some of those bicyclists don't have a vehicle drivers license since some do not realize they are mere inches from possible death. This is why the state of WI has spent 1,000 of dollars on bike trails, please use them instead of expecting vehicle drivers to go out of their way and possibly cause an accident due to the bicyclists hogging at times the road.

I think the university needs a grant to study this, like 1 billion dollars.

I'm glad to see the Madison Police tackle the tough issues instead of wasting their time entrapping Illinois pedophiles like the Milton PD.
Actually, I agree. If they are on the road and are subject to the rules of the road, they should be treated like any other motorist.

If they want to be treated with equal rights then why aren't their fines treated equal as a motorist?

about time something is done about the cyclist that dont obey the laws and rules, and yes some of them do think they own the road, when they get hurt because they cut someone off their the first ones to sue and it was usually thier fault. Cyclist should also be made to carry insurance like automobiles do, so they can pay for some of the damages they cause.

Too bad Wisconsin can't enact an "Idaho stop" law. Cyclists in that state can slow to a prudent speed before proceeding, and don't lose their muscle-powered momentum.

Probably don't need to involve the FBI:)......I'm sure the majority of them have driver licenses, if they don't pay up just suspend their driver licenses. If they want to share the roads and be given the same rights as cars, bicyclists should obey the same laws or face the consequences......

So what do we do if they don't pay up? Send the FBI and kick in some doors, or beer at the White house?
