MADISON--All Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles offices will be closed Friday, Aug. 7, as DMV staff complete one of eight unpaid days required for each of the next two years. Employee furloughs for all university and state employees are part of the 2009 – 2011 state budget recently signed into law.

DMV’s automated phone system will remain available so that motorists can still make road test appointments and have access to recorded information.

Titling and registration services are offered by many third-party partners, such as some police stations, grocery stores and financial institutions around the state. Information can be found at: http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/vehicles/plates/walkin.htm.

DMV would like to remind customers that many services like vehicle registration renewal do not require a visit to a service center and are available online 24/7 at: www.wisconsindmv.gov.

All DMV offices will resume regular business hours on Monday, August 10.

The Janesville DMV is much better now that they are done remodeling. Taking a number and having a seat is so much better than standing in line. And last time I was in they were fast (gasp!) and friendly!

Good for the DMV people to not get paid. However, that should be reflected in an annual performance review and not due to cutbacks. These people are the rudest, slowest and most inconsiderate people in ANY business around. They take their sweet time and look at the customers like they are inconveniencing them in their "buisy" day.

momof5: Your comment about "jumping curbs" made me laugh outloud and remember a funny incident from driver's education. Back in the old days, teens took driver's education as a class in high school and took the road part of the class with a teacher from the school. Anyway, my driver's ed partner put the car in reverse by mistake one day, hit the gas too hard, panicked and slammed into a fence while in reverse. That still didn't stop her or the car; we ended up just inches from taking a "reverse" dive (or drive) into an above-ground pool. The whole time, I was in the back seat of the car, choking on my gum and trying not to laugh, scream or wet my pants. Oh, memories ...

I have friends that work at that place that is closing. They engrave pens for the president there. I sure hope when they move south of the border, the president don't order from them anymore. But I bet he still will.

Just heard Paul Krugman, the economists who received a Nobel award, and he said that all these furloughs are exactly what we shouldn't do given the recession.

I haven't graduated to using pens yet. Only pencils and washable markers. lol

SarahB: I have heard that about the one in Beloit. I have to be honest, the Janesville DMV has almost always been "pleasant" to deal with. Madison on the other hand.... ick!

momof5: I've found the secret to fast and friendly service at the DMV is: 1.) Utilize the Beloit location and/or 2.) Have a big smile on your face when you get to the counter. This action plan has yet to fail me.

I think any company that moves to Mexico should have its products and services banned in the US.

Everyone should be glad they have jobs. We were told Friday our facility is possibly moving to Mexico. The move will be complete by March 2010. Another 140 or so people without jobs in Janesville.

I would think that they should all work without pay to make up for all the work that doesn't seem to get done when they are there.

I would think working partly staffed would be more service orientated. Giving 1/3 the staff off each Friday for 3 consecutive Fridays or something similar????
