Driver in Wisconsin gas station death pleads not guilty
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) — A Sheboygan man accused of crashing a minivan into a convenience store and killing a clerk has pleaded not guilty to a charge of negligent homicide.
Thirty-two-year-old Jeremy J. Pfister was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on the charge, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
Prosecutors say Pfister was trying to maneuver the van last month from the passenger seat while his wife paid for gas.
The van crashed through the window and killed 18-year-old Emily Hughes. Pfister’s three kids in the van weren’t hurt.
Police say no drugs or alcohol were involved.
Defense attorney Chris Eippert said Thursday Pfister is deeply sorry, and Eippert doesn’t think the accident constitutes criminal conduct.
A trial date hasn’t been set.

I know the guy is probably looking for a plea bargain, but how can he seriously plea NOT GUITY to this? Is this charge equal to what we used to call "manslaughter"?

I think it does constitute criminal conduct. Driving from the passenger seat is reckless, and he knows better because he's deeply sorry.

Maneuvering a vehicle from the passenger seat?? Now there's some STUPID thinking. Idiot. Hope he gets convicted.

Well, negligent is about as close to a legal synonym for stupid as there is. ("Reckless" is the next step up, but that's more about people who not just know better, they don't care about the outcome.)

Granted his three children were not hurt physically, but I would bet there is some mental hurt there. Not a thing to witness at all.

I would add a charge of negligent stupidity on top of the negligent homicide..... he acted stupidly that is for sure.
