Wisconsin hotels seek exemption to smoking ban
MADISON—Managers of some Wisconsin hotels want an exemption to the statewide smoking ban before it takes effect next summer.
The ban covers all workplaces, including bars, restaurants and hotels. That means an end to designated smoking rooms.
Tom Ziarnik (ZAR’-nik) manages Doubletree Inns in Madison and Milwaukee. He wants to be able to set aside 25 percent of rooms for smoking.
State Rep. Gary Sherman agrees. The Port Wing Democrat says without an exemption, tourists could take their business across state borders.
Several lawmakers favored such an exemption when the ban was being debated. But they reversed their votes in a compromise to ensure the overall ban passed.

I smoke and I refuse to stay in a smoking room in a hotel. The smell makes me want to vomit the second I walk in the door. Hotels should not be an exception to the smoking ban

the smoking ban should be banned.
the free market ALWAYS works.
if i don't want to frequent a bar, a hotel, a restaurant, that allows smoking, then I can go down the street and frequent some enterprising soul who emphasizes "no smoking."
same with hotels.
i don't smoke and i never will.
and i don't frequent places that allow smoking.

Exempt one business then all business get the same exemptions. The same argument is raging with health care. Congress is exempt from mandated health care forced on all Americans. Congress gets to keep their FEHBP- FEDERAL EMPLOYEES HEALTH BENEFITS PROGRAM.

I don't know why everyone is concerned with losing their rights. Fortunately smoking and trans fats are just the beginning. Soon the government will be telling us what to put our heat/ac on (already done in ca) and how much water to flush in our toilets (already in wi). Why not try for government run health care? Don't worry, all you fat greasy unhealthy non-smokers will get yours soon enough. Government does not discriminate.

well id like to breathe non toxic air also, but thats not going to happen, all this whining about smoking is just getting ridiculous.i smoke and i dont like it when someone in a restaurant is blowing smoke in my face when im trying to eat,and i dont like it in my home either.i also dont like smelling a ton of perfume or cologne on someone it makes me sick to my stomach, especially when youre in a restaurant trying to eat.and dont tell me its not bad for your health, because it is.well if they want smoking gone so bad, then take it away!then you can raise their damn taxes so high, the whiners wont be able to afford to go out in public anyway.where do you brainiacs think all those taxes we pay on cigarettes go?if you dont like the smoke stay away from it!theres hardly anywhere you can smoke,so quit your complaining, this is ruining some peoples businesses.do you care about that?i bet not.and most of you doing the complaining probably never even go to the places you are still allowed to smoke.the next thing you they will be sending the smoking police to your house.(lol)also you see how well the smoking ban works at mercy hospital, they stand outside on that property and smoke all the time.you might as well realize you are not going to control what some people do.the only ones you will control are the ones who are afraid to stand up for themselves.so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

as a smoker i myself dont understand why Wisconsin has banned smoking in a bar, but now is considering allowing smoking in a hotel room? Even as a mild smoker i cant stand the smell of smoke in a hotel room. But if i go out for a drink you should expect smoke in a bar, its like banning alcohol in a bar. Its all backwards in my opinion as they use non-smoking bartenders and waitresses as second hand scapegoats to push their nonsmoking agendas. With this false logic, can we also conclude that a bartender who doesnt drink and is assaulted by a drunk patron should we therfore ban alcohol for causing the harm? Without the alcohol the assult would not have occured, just like without the smoke the nonsmoker would not have been likewise forced into a potentially harmful situation.

Let me get this straight, a manager of Double Trees in Madison and Milwaukee is afraid that people will take their business to another state? Let's see . . . Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa all have smoking bans, so where are these lodgers going to go? Escanaba? Iron Mountain? Bit of a commute.

The important stuff, do you mean getting like getting this country out of debt that our politicians put us in, or how about focusing on the deadbeat parents who run from paying child support, maybe focus on why we have such horrible gas prices yet their pockets are getting bigger, what about the preservatives they put in food, or how about the problems with Medicare and how they are forcing all all of us to go on state medicaid and getting rid of our private plans. What about our school systems and the problems they have. Yes non smokers have rights, but so do smokers. So dont sit here and say there are not more important things to worry about or take care of. The taxes on cigerettes alone help this messed up budget. Our country is very screwed up in its way of thinking!

Sugarbear, what exactly do you consider the important stuff?
I think every public area should be smoke free including side walks and parks. My RIGHT is to breathe clean fresh unpolluted air.

Give me a break! If the rooms are full and you don’t want to stay in a smoking room then find another hotel. When the smoking rooms are full, the smokers who want to smoke have to do that so why is it such a big deal?
Why is it that everyone is so quick to condemn the smokers and try to force them to quit? It’s a choice, the choice to be free and live in what is suppose to be a free country.
If you want to continue to complain about the smokers then also complain about the drinkers, all the fat people in the world who eat junk food or over eat, and don’t let me forget all the crappy drivers in the world. Its all bad for our health!
If people want to smoke it is their right and the business should have the right to say what they want in their business. If they don’t want to accommodate the non smokers it’s not prejudice it’s a choice.
Just like whom I chose to allow in my home is a choice.
This world spends way too much money on stupid stuff instead of focusing on the important stuff. By the way I did quit smoking a long time ago but I support choice.
So give me a break!
