Weather takes toll on Wis. wasp population

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state's wasp population seems to be down this year, possibly because of the wetter spring and cooler summer.

Phil Pellitteri is a bug expert at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He says every summer he gets calls about wasp problems from farmer's markets or outdoor restaurants. He says this year he hasn't gotten any complaints.

The wasps in question are German yellow jackets. They're yellow and black and generally have nasty tempers.

They thrive in hot weather, which Wisconsin has had little of this summer. They also nest on the ground, making them especially vulnerable to rainy springs.

German yellow jackets generally start getting more aggressive between August and October. Pellitteri says this year wasps might not appear until mid-September.

However, if a person is sensitive or has an allergy to stings, perhaps it wouldn't be a good idea to ignore a nest on your property, and in that case, calling in a professional to handle the problem probably would be a good idea!

partarican1: We had a nest of the black and white bees in one of our apple trees a few years ago and they were actually pretty mellow. They are called "bald-faced hornets" and they make the big paper nests, which I still have hanging in the garage. You can even buy fake ones and hang them from your eaves and they are supposed to keep bees from building nearby. Don't know if they work or not. Anyhow, I didn't bother them and they didn't bother me and I mowed right under their nest all summer/fall with no problems. Of course, an exterminator will tell you different, that's their job. But, after a couple of good frosts, they died off and they didn't come back the next year.
Nurse4u: Just wondering...are you maybe referring to another type of hornets and the smaller paper nests with combs or cells that they build from overhangs and such? If so, that is different from the kind this article is about, I believe, which is about the smaller wasps which nest in the ground. In fact, I just discovered one last time I mowed, they have taken over a gopher hole in our back yard! Luckily, I spotted them before they figured out it was me that got them so stirred up. I probably nicked one and that caused them to exude an odor, known as a "pheromone" that is a distress signal to the entire nest. I left the area without delay!

I really don't mind that they aren't as thick as could be, I hate them!! They are aggressive and also hurt when they sting!!!

IndysGirl: Maybe that is why there seems to be more spiders than in years past. I keep knocking their webs off my car and they are back there by the next morning.

I got curious and Wikied wasps at work. Did anyone know that they are preditory and actueat other bugs... even spiders? Maybe that is why all the other bugs are terrible this year.

No, not random, simply a deliberate “misreading” of wasp as WASP.
.
Some days, the clue bird just whizzes on by, unimpeded.

According to the latest U.S. Census data, in little more than a generation minorities will become the majority, thus enabling White Americans to ‘get on the receiving end’ of government cash, jobs and other benefits which they can’t get now because of their unfortunate racial status.

partarican1:
.
Black&white wasps could be paper wasps, which aren’t entirely bad to have around. You might do some research with Google, wiki has some pictures so you can compare and learn a bit about them.

So what about the black and white ones that have set up shop in my tree? What are they and how can I get rid of them?
