A 23-year-old Janesville man was shot in the leg Saturday morning at a gathering in the 400 block of Harrison Avenue, Beloit, according to a news release from the Beloit Police Department.

Adam P. Galvan was treated and released at Beloit Memorial Hospital, the release says.

Beloit police responded to a report of shots fired at the resident at 4 a.m. Police were notified at 4:25 a.m. that a private vehicle had dropped Galvan off at the hospital with a gunshot wound, the release says.

Police discovered casings from a semi-automatic shotgun in the road outside the home and gunshot damage to Galvan's vehicle and a nearby home, the release says. No one else was reported injured.

The shooter had been at the gathering, but no witnesses were providing information about his or her identity Saturday morning, the release says. Anyone with information should call the Beloit Police Department at (608) 364-6807 or Rock County Communications at (608) 757-2244.

truecitizen: What is your problem? I wrote a comment about the neighborhood where this occurred and nothing about race. This incident took place, as I stated before, near an area that is treasured for its historical value. In addition to what I wrote earlier, it is also surrounded by churches and is generally peaceful. Also, where did you get your information that the victim is a "usual suspect"? He isn't even listed in the court records for any prior problems. You seem to have a problem accepting anyone's opinion other than your own. What's up with that?

Okay lets become imperical about it. I challenge the Gazette to have both police departments provide statistics about volume of calls, relation to population (no-not race--numbers), and what kind of calls they were. I think it's obvious this is a hot-button issue and everyone's passionate about it. I know politicians and administrators like to swagger things around here, so hopefully it's just honest stats we get. If we get them, because it seems like people want to cover up, rather than face up!

beeferer....I agree, there wasn't race being brought into it. People always and typicaly and lemmingly (another word for SarahB to pick apart) point out race, when it's not even being brought up. Maybe it's because they know something and are pre-defensive about it.
*
And for all of you. Beloit has more trouble than Janesville, smaller population, and more cops who are busier all the time. Oh and SarahB....yes the victim is a 'usual-suspect'.
*
If you want to show pride towards a community, try helping to create change instead of rewarding bad behavior. I would like to see these stories become a lot less frequent, but until then....it just is what it is. It is true that Janesville is sliding and is not far behind.

Beefy, sure. People who claim on this board they are not surprised at the violence in Beloit. Beloit has a large minority population so there must be crime and violence there.

Hey Joker- Cite an example of a racist comment here (other than your own). I must have missed them.

I have lived in both cities and they are both the same except, Janesville Police are very prejudice, exspecially in the fourthward district. If you are a young black person or biracial they mess with you bad. O'brien McNally and Severson are 3 of the main cops that mess with these young kids, and I have seen it first hand as a middle aged white women, I feel these young people need to be left alone if they are not bothering anyone. Half the time these young people are just hanging out playing basketball or just being with each other, if one of these cops see them these young people are being harressed and being accused of selling drugs. Look at all the older white people in Janesville getting busted for sellin drugs. Look officers this is 2009 not the 50's, I think these officers might want to check their own backyard

To all of those passing judgment on Beloit, give Janesville some time. With the way companies are running away from this town, it won't be long before Beloit's stats will be something to strive for, not look down on......

Perhaps someone heard it, shot spotter, witness, police officer in a unit, etc. It isn't rocket science, a semi-auto, when fired rapidly sounds different than other firearms.

Different than a pump,or double barrel? We know at least one shot was fired, because someone was hit.

Last time I looked at the stats, Janesville and Beloit had similar crime rates, both a bit above the state average, except that Jvl had more property crime and Beloit had more violent crime. (Those are hard numbers of reported crimes.) This isn't really a huge thing to hold over anybody's head; it's a problem for both cities as this incident shows.
.
It's also silly to pretend that any neighborhood is immune from crime. We had to kick out certain tenants for drug activity; later that year they were arrested at their apartment on the east side. I have seen the same "stop snitching" culture here as in larger cities.

Enough of the racist comments bashing Beloit. Why does Janesville continue to look down its nose at Beloit. Last time I checked Beloit has a lot going for it. Can't say the same for Janesville.

I come from Beloit and I will admit Beloit has a higher crime rate and more bad areas to stay away from, but I have lived in Janesville for 20 years now and Janesville has the same crime and problems. Perhaps no one here remembers the gang member pointing a shotgun at another gangbanger through a window at Denny's last year, or the boy shot near the YMCA a year ago. We in Janesville have an elitist attitude that is off putting to people from outside of this city (not just Beloit) and it is going to get someone killed because we feel the crime is staying south of here and it can't happen here, yeah, right, keep your heads in the sand and keep putting other cities down, because there are plenty of people from cities better than ours that think we live in a slum to. As for me I am aware of the problems in our city and have taken the steps to try and safeguard my family. I am not of the attitude that as long as I stay away from Keeler and Porter Ave. in Beloit I will be fine. Crime and violence can come to you as you fill your tank at Kwik Trip or as you sleep in your bed at night as we all discovered 3 years ago when the triple murder hit Janesville, they were not gangbangers and did not put themselves in a dangerous situation by hanging with the "wrong crowd" of hanging out in the wrong part of town, they simply went to bed in their own home. Sleep tight thinking about that with you head in the sand.

truecitizen: Here is the definition for "devil's advocate: --- "someone who takes the worse side just for the sake of argument". That does not seem what I was doing, but it might describe your comment and some of the others here. What I wrote was the truth about the neighborhood where this shooting took place. Do you have any truth about what you are assuming about the victim?

Sarahb...stop with the devil's advocate thinking all the time! I agree with the cut to the chase attitude of some of these others posting here, and I wouldn't feel safe on most of thse B-town streets either. Glavan was probably involved in criminal doings-anyway.

Starbuck1, Badgerlvr, browntown96: I am sorry, but you folks don't always know what you are talking about. I grew up about two blocks from this shooting site. My family has owned our home for nearly 50 years. My mother lived there safely and happily into her late 80s when she moved into an assisted living facility because she could no longer climb stairs alone. It is a good and safe neighborhood for the most part, comparable to the historic area near the courthouse here in Janesville. My family's home and the neighborhood are on the National Historical list; Beloit College is one block away from my family's home, and a beautiful park sits across the street. A private school is located on the same block as where this shooting took place. My point is that bad things can happen anywhere ... perhaps, even in your own neighborhood. To make statements about a location where you may have never visted is a sign of stupidity.

Sadly, this story isn't far from being re-written with a new "victim" name and a Janesville location.
With all the feel-good, National Night Out, K9 demo, fair tent, DARE and other law enforcement pie-n-the-sky fluff stuff, the reality is that we have not hired for, equipped and supported functional, street-level law enforcement operations enough, while immature, dysfunctional behavior, self-centered "citizens" with compete entitlement expectations have flourished wihtout boundries.
There will be a reckoning...but until we realize how misguided, however well-meaning, we've become.

Prevention-I will never "be placed in that situation" because I would not GO there or put myself in that situation. People do have a choice when it comes to their surroundings and what kind of people they CHOOSE to hang around with.

It doesn't matter where it is, if people fear enough for their lives, they won't talk. Until you've been placed in that type of situation, you'll never understand.

Stacy, A semi-automatic shotgun uses the same shells as a single shot shotgun, double barrel shotgun, or a pump shotgun. How did they figure it was a semi-auto.
