Milton teacher talks stall

Seven hours was not enough for the Milton School District and teachers union to reach an agreement on a contract.

The two sides met from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in their first mediation session but still disagree on a variety of issues, representatives from both sides said afterward.

The teachers union, the Milton Education Association, will take a proposal from the district to its members for discussion Friday, union President Shelly Kress and Superintendent Bernie Nikolay said.

The teachers’ two-year contract expired June 30.

The district filed for mediation in June because it realized after five meetings that the two sides weren’t going to agree on their own, Nikolay said.

justin if you don't know the facts don't talk. Pretty confident the word immature fits you.

Pat - You know what they say when you assume something. How do you know how "nice" my salary is? Did I say how much I made? What if I made $7.25/hour and got a 3% raise and three $50 quarterly bonuses. I must be living it large. I'm sorry that you weren't smart enough to get a teaching degree and earn a nice salary and benefits. Jealousy is an evil thing. You must be a socialist.

justintimberlakerules. NO one said anything on here about if I don't get a raise, no one should. Where do you get this stuff from? Read people's posts before commenting.

I think most people are happy to have jobs and what ever benefits they may have right now and are not to concerned with raises.

A job with no raise trumps,, no job at all.

Teachers should keep that in mind.

Schools are making cuts all the time and will continue to have to do so for some time to come.

I will use the example of the police officer's in Madison taking paycuts, to ensure there are no layoffs of co-workers and not a shortage of police on the streets.

Every where there are cuts being made. Some thing has to give within these schools, the teachers want raises and the same benefits and better working conditions. ( This statement is based on another school district in the middle of contract talks.) as you can see there is not enough info in this article to really know what the problem is ..

But the biggest sticking points in teacher contract negotiations is money and benefits.

Pete I agree with you . I think there has to be a better way to ' pay ' teachers. It seems as though there are really , really good teachers in the school system, and then there are teachers who should not be teaching at all. They should not all get raises across the board. They need to be evaluated and 'tested' much as their students are. It really is not fair to the teachers who are excellent and put heart and soul into their jobs compared to those teachers who just do the minimum of what is expected.

First of all my post was right to the point. YOU come off as immature, bragging about your good fortune to be employed and making a nice salary. Remember as you write many are not employed, and how nice tax dollars are paying your generous salary. The point being is how could CC be jealous?? So anyone one who disagrees with you is jealous and their posts are gibberish? So far the only one on here talking gibberish is you. You come off as foolish and uneducated on the issues , I think you just want to argue with someone. You have not made a argument for your case either. Do your homework, I doubt you even know what the tax base is for Milton.

Pat - You're post is kind of all over the place and doesn't make much sense. I don't see anywhere I posted anything about how much cc makes. The rest of your post is jibberish

Woody - Yes, the taxpayer does pay my salary. Not that it really matters. I don't use police or fire service so why should my taxes pay them and give them raises. That's your reasoning, right? You pay the teachers salary so you should be able to decide how much they get paid. There are way to many holes in that argument. Don't get me wrong, the teachers might be greedy in this case but so far nobodies come up with a good argument why. I love the "I didn't get a raise so nobody should get a raise" mentality.

justinwannabe- I think any teacher would laugh at your choice of the word ' jealous' . I do not believe cc ever talked about their income. Must not feel the need to brag, in this time of recession its in poor taste. Then again I was raised and taught that its rude to talk about how much money one makes, or to ask someone how much they make, or how much they paid for something. In your case I don't know if its just rude or immature.

I don't hear any whining. You just must be jealous. I got a raise and three quarterly bonuses this year, have you lost respect for me as well?

justintimberlakerules-- Why would respect for teachers have gone down in the last 10 yrs??

hmmmm???

Maybe all the whining they do.. yet they are the one profession that continues to get raises regardless if they are deserved or not.

As for Unions they only have their own interests in mind. As long as they get their money.

I'm confused, what part of this story would cause respect for teachers to go down and why is this just another greedy union? Is part of this story invisible?

I usually give my baby sitters a movie and popcorn while the watch the kids... maybe the district could use this tactic to help settle the contract.

It would be nice to know what it is they don't agree on. Mediation is a good way to go.
