Wis. holiday deer hunt gets under way

MADISON — Wisconsin's holiday deer hunt is under way.

The state Department of Natural Resources is offering an 11-day hunt in the chronic wasting disease zone. It begins Thursday and runs through Jan. 11.

Earn-a-buck regulations are in effect in the zone. That means a hunter must bag an antlerless deer before they can take a buck. Hunters who shot an antlerless deer during an earlier season and got a buck sticker are qualified to shoot a buck, however.

The CWD zone encompasses most of southern Wisconsin.

400exracer First there is no standing corn in northern Wisconsin where I hunt. And anyone who carries a cell phone into the woods will not hunt with us for long. They have had a 50% fawn kill by wolves and bears in northern Wisconsin the last few years. They took a lot of bears there this year now if we could just thin the wolf packs. And northern Wisconsin has not seen a real bad winter in years. And we did not have earn a buck in our area either. I know a lot of people I work with killed a lot of deer this year. But most of the hunting they do is the middle of the state or more south. Won't be long and the wolves will make their way south. And when they start killing livestock or God forbid a person then maybe the DNR will pull their head out of their butt and do something. Until then the people of northern Wisconsin continue to have their dogs killed and the deer continue to be the main menu. Bringing back wolves to Wisconsin was a bad idea why can't someone just admit it.

I definitely think that the herd has been reduced, but isnt that what they were trying to accomplish? There were a lot of things that played a part in that...tough winter....low fawn production...earn a buck...and standing corn. I was able to shoot 4 deer this year and saw about the same amount as years past. The people that I hunt with didnt see barely anything, but I think that is because they arent doing what it takes to see deer. They are texting while hunting and that doesnt help you see deer. I dont agree with a lot of the things the DNR does, but it isnt as bad as people are making it out to be. They just need to keep it simple and not confuse people and make sure not to have any earn a buck!!

vball your confused if you think the DNR lets the hunters guesstimate the deer herd. The DNR has refused for years to listen to the hunters. They would rather take the insurance companies word for how many deer are out there. And then the boner they pulled putting wolves back in Wisconsin is unforgivable. The hunters have been telling them for decades that the deer population is not as large as they claim it was. A deaf ear was all that was given. This year they blamed it on standing corn and the weather. Its time for someone at the DNR to step up and take responsibility for the mismanagement of the deer herd. They got a couple feet of snow in northern Wisconsin the last few days. Which will make it very easy for the wolves to run down any deer that may have been left.

I think that the state needs to consider re-counting the deer herd population due to the low rates of deer harvested this year! They cant just rely on hunters to guess-timate the deer population

facts101: "the peace thats found up there is like nothing on this earth." And that is why I hunt, and there's not a deer on earth that could make it any better. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night.

helge1939 we have land about 30 miles south of the big lake. Been hunting there since I was old enough to keep up with my dad. After this last season my dad says he is all done hunting. We could never sell the "cabin" on the 40 there is too much family history there. And someday maybe the deer will come back and my grandson's can hunt there. It's a 6 hour drive but the peace thats found up there is like nothing on this earth.

loose you saw deer feeding on public land. Now hunt those same deer and see how much private land they go to. I too hunted in northwestern Wisconsin never saw a hair in the woods. Did see a lot of wolf tracks. I hope you continue to see deer since all that will change when the wolves have to move south to feed themselves. I put forth effort you have to with all the paper mill land where I hunt. But effort is useless when all you see is wolf tracks. I have hunted this area for over 40 years and its sad to see what DNR polices have done to this area. If I did not have land there I would move elsewhere.

Went out today to public land and kicked up 6 deer. The problem with the low deer counts is Wisconsin hunters have become accustomed to being able to walk out the back door and shoot a deer. Two nights ago we were coming back from Madison and in the fields between Madison and Janesville I saw over 30 deer feeding. The deer are out there but now the numbers are coming down and hunters actually will have to put some time and effort into their hunts. I know up around the Minocqua area the most hunters only hunt till about 2 opening day and never make it back out on the Sunday. Cant expect to shoot deer if you do not put in the effort. I saw plenty of does up north but could only shoot bucks and the weather up there put a damper on that happening. Our party of 6 shot 4 deer and this was on public land. Hunters quit crying and put in the effort.

By the way Merry Christmas all!

Remember, despite the name, the Department of Natural Resources is not here to conserve natural resources. It is actually the Hunting Service and Satisfaction Bureau.

kraut70: None of those are fair game. However, any mounted deer head IS included in this holiday hunt. Good luck!
