Favre's agent: NY Jets QB retiring

By ASSOCIATED PRESS   Wednesday, February 11, 2009 - 9:53 a.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Favre’s agent says the New York Jets quarterback will retire.

The 39-year-old Favre instructed agent James “Bus” Cook to tell the team Wednesday that he won’t return for a 19th NFL season — and second with the Jets.

In an e-mail to ESPN, Favre says he has no regrets about ending his career in New York and praises the team’s owner, front office and fired coach Eric Mangini.

Favre wrote he enjoyed his time with the Jets, despite a late-season slump that saw New York go from 8-3 to missing the playoffs. Favre threw nine interceptions as the Jets went 1-4 down the stretch, and a torn right biceps might have contributed.

Ledzep77: Your continuous rants about a subject that no one else has written about or even cares about, shows that you may be emotionally obsessed with Mr. Brady and Mr. Belichick. Your preoccupation with them could be a form of obsessive love. Check it out.
Once again, try and have a wonderful day.

BostonBill:Yes I was a fan until Bart Star retired, because after that the packer organization started to make bad and sometimes rediculas decissions, with that being I lost faith in them. Mind you I did still watch them through the years I just don't agree with some of their choices. But exposer to the fan base and their "on & off" beliefs has always been there.

(Boston Bill) I have lived in wisconsin all my life and I was once a packer fan until Bart Star retired, I know what it's like to be around the packer fan enviroment, I've seen the sudden changes of packer fan beliefs and additudes, they can turn on their heroes like a drop of a dime. True dedication would commit even through good and bad. Brett is a very talented athlete with class. Unfortunetly your being from boston (no punt intended)would not have exeprienced the sports culture of wisconsin through the years,Thankyou!

I’m not sure if there is any better fan base in the NFL. True sports fans remember their roots regardless of where they presently live and I am from Boston so I need not say anything more about that for the moment.
I will say again that I believe Brett Favre had an amazing career and will be a first ballot Hall Of Famer, but my opinion of him was lowered by the self centered way he has acted this past year. Shame on him.

Face it greenbay packer fans, When the man did good you guys were on cloud 9, When he made mistakes as all humans do (even great ones)you would stab him in the back. I've seen this many of times when he took the pack to a win you fans bragged and flapped your lips like there was no tomorrow, but when the pack lost a game you had nothing to say! I'm a Bears fan and still respect this man for what he done in the NFL to this day.

Before Favre, you had to go back to black and white film footage to see a Packer's Super Bowl win. Such a shame he couldn't have gone out with grace and dignity wearing a Packer uniform. Green Bay and the whole state would have embraced him forever as their sports hero. Not anymore. Hope the year of extra Jets pay was worth it.

Favre was the first player (EVER) to win the AP MVP three times!
Favre led the Packers to seven division championships (1995, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007), four NFC Championship Games (1995, 1996, 1997, and 2007), two NFC Championships (1996 and 1997), and one Super Bowl championship (XXXI)!
Favre holds a number of NFL records including: most career touchdown passes (464), most career passing yards (65,127), most career pass completions (5,720), most career pass attempts (9,280), most consecutive starts among NFL quarterbacks (269; 291 total starts including playoffs), and most career victories as a starting quarterback (169)!

To all who want to say negative things about number four, just remember what he did on the field. The things that happened off the field don't really matter. He may not be the greatest QB ever, but there is no greater legend. The Favre Mystique is undeniable. As far as a supporting cast is concerned, Favre didn't have a solid supporting cast like Montana had in San Fran, Aikman in Dallas, or Elway in Denver. He did so much with so little. He made others around him better.

brett was an excellent asset to the game and did many great things for the packers. I think last years drama had alot to do with thompson needing a new star that HE brought to the team ... not one that already existed so he probably tried to talk brett into retirement. not saying it wasnt 4's time to retire but he did get a little push that way. i like watching him play for packers or whoever cuz his passion just does alot for whoever he plays for. btw, I also had a hard time watching him take over for majik. GL in retirement and go packers and rogers!!

gonefishin: Brett Favre WAS a truly great quarterback for many years and I think it is a given that in TEAM sports, any player is helped by their supporting “cast”. A quarterback, a running back or a receiver seem to get all the glory but without 10 other hard working players on the field, a team will not be a winner. That said, I have an appreciation for Brett Favre’s tremendous accomplishments as a player but I think his actions last year were very self centered and a slap in the face to many people who believed he was a TRUE Packer. Let’s not forget that Brett lobbied hard to get Randy Moss and a few days after Moss signed with New England, Brett quit.

I don't hate Brett Favre.
I am not a Bear fan, closet or otherwise.
I was not a bench warmer in high school or college (still don't understand the relevance of that comment).
But I have been a huge Packer fan and pro football fan for over 50 years.
I loved watching 4 play and will forever respect everything he did as a Packer on the field of play. But every pro career comes to an end at some point despite how much some people can't accept it. It is unfortunate that we, as Packer fans, were forced to endure last season's standoff between the Thompson and Favre egos before the season began. They are BOTH at fault for the way things ended for Favre in Green Bay.
Rodgers is clearly a better quarterback than Favre at this stage of their respective careers, one rising and one fading. Is Rodgers as good as Favre was in his prime 10 years ago? Of course not. Not yet, anyway and likely never will be. But it was time for the Packers to make a change, especially when Favre could not make a decision regarding his future and the team needing to plan for last season. About the only positive move Thompson has made since he took the reigns of the Pack was having the guts to let the legend go...let the young promising quarterback have a shot and prove himself...and get a third round pick from the Jets as well. There was a day 18 years ago when I hated the idea of some young quarterback from the Falcons taking over for the Magic man. I am a Packer fan first and a Favre fan second.
I wish Favre well in retirement...or with the next team he decides to play for. I will smile with pride and fond memories when he is inducted at Canton in a few years. But, as a pro football fan, I hope all the Favre comeback/retirement drama is finally done. He deserves better. We deserve better.

mbird425 - I have watched the Pack for many years now, and always get some enjoyment from watching my favorite team. Why do you watch football at all, if only for the "special" times? Yes, Brett brought a special something to each game, but that is what separates him from most QB's. Rodgers did fine this last year, and I hope better this year. He was tied down by receivers who dropped to many balls, the matador front line, and a defense that couldn't stay healthy. Being a Packer fan doesn't mean you accept mediocrity, but you don't give up and cry like a Viking, Bear or Lions fan. Quit griping, it's a new season.

To devote his life to the Packer's and then be thrown out like yesterdays paper is insulting. He would give you more respect than most on here have given him, and he has no reason to . While he on the other hand has earned it. Enjoy retirement Brett.

I am 42 years old. I remember Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkenton - the list goes on and on. Brett Favre is the best quarterback I ever watched play the game of football. In time, people who are angry over the way he left Wisconsin will get over themselves, realize this is a business, and realize this probably wasn't the way Brett wanted it all to end. The man did as much, if not more, for the Packers than they wound up doing for him. In your heart, you know he'll always be a Packer and we'll always love him. Ten years from now in Canton, there will be a sea of green and gold, he'll talk about the glory years here and he'll cry. Hating is a waste of time. Remember the good stuff because in the end that's all that matters.

Anyone that says that watching the Packers this last season was enjoyable apparently does not care what team they watch. They might as well been watching the Lions play. Brett Favre brought that little kid at heart ethusiasm to the game and you were always on the edge of your seat. Unlike this season with the Packers, you could get up to go to the bathroom and not worry about missing anything. I used to enjoy watching Packer games. But when Brett left, it was not the same. I then started to watch the Jets games for that same enjoyment. Remember, because an interception is made, does not always happen because of the quarterback. Receivers are not always where they are suppose to be. Brett tried to make things happen and brought excitement to the game. Brett has his heart in the game and with all his starts you knew he loved the game and did not want to quit. Go to the sidelines Brett and become a coach so I have a team to follow once again!!Unlike the management, Thompson & McCarthy!!!! They wanted him to play like that new guy-Rodgers...sit back, shut up and do as we say. This is not high school ball. Plus, I heard that Rodgers & Thompson were a couple behind the scenes.

6 months of endless media speculation.
6 months of teary-eyed press conferences.
6 months of indecisiveness.
6 months of incessant fan debate.
He will retire and un-retire at least 5 more times before that 6 six months passes.
Time for ol’ number 4 to just wade off into the bayou.
Brett’s a broken down old milk truck who missed a golden opportunity to retire as a Packer, on top of the world and in hallowed reverence to all Packer fans the world over...plus get paid millions to do so!
Instead, he angered many Packer faithful by leading the Jets into early season prominence, filling their fans with hope and dreams only to pull the rug out from under them with a pitiful, interception riddled 6-week performance that ended up tearing a locker room apart and getting a decent coach fired. He turned a near-Elway walk-on-water moment into a forever tarnished Namath moment in one short season. Thankfully that mess happened several hundred miles east in the rotten apple.
Enough already!
Brett, you’re done.

Favre is still one of the best things to happen for the Pack, and he always played hard. Whether it is football or anything else, it is hard to give it up when done so long. Do we really hold football at such a high level that the people who play the game can not choose to leave and change there minds and come back or comeback and go to another team so unimagineable. This guy you are all calling a trader is nothing more than one of us, we live in a country where we have a right to work where we want as long as we want and quit and come back providing the company will let you. The only thing brett is guilty of is making his choice to soon when retiring everytime. Give it up, fruitcakes. Brett Favre is doing this the responsible way. He said after the last game that if he did retire, he would not hold a news conference. He also wanted to do this to allow the Jets freedom at the upcoming Combine. You would be whining no matter what the guy did. I, for one, think he was one of the best things that ever happened to the Packers and will always cherish the fun I had watching him play. The Packers lived on without him, but their games were nowhere near as much fun to watch. The team lacks spark.
