Turtles may be killed in roadway project
MADISON — Turtles considered threatened in Wisconsin could be killed in the reconstruction of I-94 from Milwaukee to the Illinois border.
The Department of Natural Resources is taking public comments through March 6 before deciding to authorize the "incidental taking" of the Blanding’s turtle as well as a Seaside crowfoot — a type of buttercup — in the $1.9 billion construction project.
State wildlife officials say workers will be required to use exclusionary fencing beginning next month to help protect the turtle known by the yellow underside of its neck.
The state’s wildlife Web site describes the medium-sized turtle as timid and gentle and notes that fencing along roadways are effective in reducing accidental deaths of the species that can live up to 70 years.

What's up doc? Are you clairvoyant? whoanellie's post wasn't on the board until 22 minutes AFTER I posted mine. Tell me how you knew I was going to come back on here, read a post submitted after I posted mine and not understand it? I am going to try to follow your lead here. I predict that on April 23rd, 2012, you won't understand a post by Simplicity- (who incidentally won't move to Janesville until- wait, it's coming to me- November 6th), 2010! I am in here reading over the messages and trying to grasp the spirit of the conversation. I concluded, after reading these posts, that half the people in here cannot possibly be serious. You've read the posts and you know what I mean. Tongue-in-cheek seems to be the theme here so I was just following suit.

On the flip side, how much would it cost to not build the road and spare the turtles, vs. build a new road next to a road that already exists? Seems fiscally responsible to save the turtles.

The real problem is that we humans, specifically Americans (of which I proudly, if not at times begrudgingly raise my hand), live too wastefully and arrogantly. If all individuals on the planet lived as americans, its estimated that it would take eight planet Earth's to support the current global population of near 7 billion. In other words, we have little regard for anyone, save for ourselves. We live at the expense of others, not in consideration of. Who asked if a turtle is more important than a human? Of course not. But as we lose habitat and species, this is often an indicator of something deeper. We have to consider for a moment, what's best for everyone, not just what's best for me.

The reason why turtles come close to the highway is to lay their eggs in the gravel/sand. Because of us humans, there is no natural habitat for them to do this. THere are not too many of them...Why would they be listed as endangered?
And how does this article have ANYTHING to do with innocent babies being killed? Of course people care about that, but why would I comment on that. THis article is about turtles and buttercups. And yes, they have every right to live as we do.

Natural selection?? Excuse me, but building a gi-normous interstate is not in any way natural. I can not believe the comments you guys have posted on this subject. What if it were endangered polar bears? Would you say "just let them get run over"? I'm sure there are other solutions to this and I can't believe that the DNR would just let this endangered species die off for a stupid road expansion.
And who is saying turtles are more important than humans? This is a defenseless animal. The human race has caused thousands of species of plants, animals, and insects to become extinct. They have just as much right to be here as we do. Yes, we need jobs, but how does saying that we should try to save these creatures have anything to do with putting them before humans?

So many of you totally disgust me. I don't think anyone ever said that they were chosing turtles over babies or human lives. So the remarks regarding babies and human lives don't belong here. God created human lives just as He did every other living creature. No ONE has the right to decide who/what lives/dies other than Him.

If you have ever driven on this stretch of road then you will know how much it really needs to be replaced. The last two times I was on it I received chips in my windshield due to the crumbling chunks of pavement being flung about. While I feel bad for any turtles that might die, it's more important to fix that road and make it safer for the PEOPLE that use it.

beeferer,
You read whoanellie's post, but you didn't understand it. She was saying that it seems more people care about the turtles than they do human beings. And I would agree. People are losing there jobs and their homes, but for some reason turtles are just more important to some people. Not that we shouldn't be taking care of the turtles, but we should be taking care of the people first.

I think we need a study costing about maybe 23 million on how best to build a turtle fence so as to keep them off the road way. I would bet that that the UW of The Peoples Republic of Madison would just love to get more $$ from the tax payers for it.

Why are people talking about babies when the story is about turtles?!?!?! I mean come on. They aren't even remotely related. They're not even talking about baby turtles.

Oh give me a break!!!! All this over a turtle?? I wish everyone felt this emotional over the babies who are being killed--Thousands every year and no one cares. They are just an inconvenience to you. Seems to me babies are part of the "Chain" and no one stands up for them. Get your priorities straight! While ai feel sorry for the turtles I value life of a human more than an animal! If they are coming up on the highway there are too many of them. And then they are doomed anyway unless their little turle legs are fast!
God forgive us!

Some people have no purpuse either IMO and some of the posts here are sickning as to the ignorance and plain cold heartedness. Nature is part of GODS creation and so are all creatures small and large. I hope they can find a solution to the turtles and safely either move them or find a way to protect them. they are harmless, unlike some individuals.IMO (in my opinion).

The turtles should be spared. They were here first. We are not overlords of the earth, we are stewards of it. Killing an endangered species for the sake of a new road is rediculous. We need to step up as stewards of the earth and stop this madness. Relocate the road to somewhere it isn't going to kill these animals, instead of relocating the animals.

chelleandlou i completly agree with you! There might be these turtles in other places, but why wouldn't we want them here? Let's just get rid of all wildlife so that we can have roads that will probably be destroyed by these winters anyway. Does that sound better? Didnt think so.

Hello..can't they be relocated? I can't believe the ignorance of the comments posted. The turtles have a purpose in the cycle of life. If they're endangered they're protected so killing them or letting them be killed because humans are destroying their habitat is wicked. We've already destroyed enough forests, waterways, farm land and people wonder why wildlife shows up in residential areas. Wake up America!

My first response was "So?" but I then decided to say the same thing more diplomatically.
If the turtles were that close to the road, they probably were going to get run over eventually anyway.

“Turtles considered threatened in Wisconsin could be killed in the reconstruction of I-94 from Milwaukee to the Illinois border.”
Horrible!
"The Turtles" (silly alert) were so popular in the "60's", however, like many of the working people in 2009, they seem to be expendable. Oh, excuse me; it is now called, "incidental taking". Dead turtles; out of work humans, "So Happy Together", Not anymore apparently. I like turtles but I am more concerned about displaced and jobless PEOPLE. JMO
