GM schedules end of medium-duty line
General Motors announced today that it will end medium-duty truck production at its Janesville plant on April 23.
The move will result in the layoff of about 100 employees associated with medium-duty production partnership with Isuzu. A few skilled trades employees will remain past the April date.
Workers were told of the layoffs this morning.
GM ended sport-utility vehicle production at the Janesville plant in December.

All any one of us needs to do, is look to our left or right. Fifty percent of those you look at are going to be without an income due to this economy. Are you continually going to snicker at GM? WE ALL HAVE ISSUES. PERIOD> get on with it. Stop playing my house is higher on the hill than yours!!!!!

GM used to laugh at us outsorce workers for working for a lessor wage,At the same time, we were helping them get rave reviews on a quality product built in janesville. But yet we go everyday listening and seeing in the news how GM employees are loseing everything due to the present situation. What about us? Nobody seems to recognize the work we did and yet were also laid off.5 I feel bad for those families. But, lets all face it, it's a wonder that they stayed as long as they did. After all, None of us outsorce people would have ever seen one of those massive vehicles in our driveways. And better yet, Would have cost us on average 10.400 dollars a year to operate in gas.We could'nt even dream of ever affording to have such a vehicle unless we lived in it. So, I say, let that ship sink and get back to business.

When are people going to realize that GM has closed plants in Canada and Mexico too? This is not a NAFTA effect. This is a worldwide recession.

The only country where the auto business is doing well right now is India, and they don't export to the USA.

To Zoom an Fattigman who believe Democrats are for American Workers. The last polling data I found was in 2004 Bush vs Kerry. Domestic owners Bush over Kerry 53% to 41%. Foreign car owners Kerry over Bush 55 to 43. Drive to Madison and see what all the Democrats drive. There is such a thing as talking the talk and walking the walk. Liberals do the talk but don't support us. Google and check the Gallop poll.

NAFTA was one of the best things Clinton lobbied for, promoted to the public, and finally signed the bill for!
.
GM was doomed regardless of having NAFTA or no NAFTA. It will be interesting to see how many government bailouts they will get in the next 4 years. My side kept saying that after the December bailout, they would be back for another in the matter of months. Well, they are now back, and it will never end any time soon in these conditions. Why not just nationalize them at this point? We have spent enough in bailouts to buy the company something like 40 times over now. Just nationalize everything, that is the ultimate goal now, isn't it?

RichE95,
Free Trade is a traditional Republican cause, and George H.W. Bush initiated NAFTA in the U.S. It was Ratified by Clinton and a Republican Congress. More Republicans than Democrats voted for it.

ja67: My brother-in-law worked at GM. My husband worked at Lear and was layed off. We are without benefits, no medical insurance. Do I want my taxpayer money going to GM. Sorry, I can't say that I do. They want more money and yet, they plan on cutting 47,000 more workers and put them on the unemployment line. Obviously, they can't figure out how to manage the money.

Thank You to all Democrats who talk about American jobs and buy from foreign companies. Thank You to Democrat Al Gore who pushed so hard for NAFTA and continues to push for an end to American manufacturing. Thank You to President Obama who will put the wishes of environmentalists ahead of union members. Thank You to my union leadership who is more interested in name dropping their political friends than in the well being of the membership. Thank You to Jim Doyle who continues to make Wisconsin unwelcome to business.

Local boy, once again, you are spreading false quotes about me. I never said it would shut down January 1st. Once again, I was right and you are wrong. And trust me, they will be done well before April 23rd. Hate to say it, but it is only a matter of days and not a matter of weeks.
Also, I would suggest some posters on this board conduct a spell and grammar check before they post. You are making Janesville look even worse than it already does!

woody, take a look at www.local95.org. Andy posted a rebuttal to that article that explains how his comments were taken out of context (for lack of a better term). He's not "ready to bail asap", but I totally understand his position. He has 24 years of service in, and only needs a few more before he's eligible for retirement pension and benefits. To save his retirement, I don't blame him for considering a transfer. But it's not like his clothes are packed already. Besides, there aren't any plants taking transfers right now.

Another thing to ponder; What makes anyone think they are beneath having to know what it is like to have to ask for foodstamps or live as some lower paid people have done most of their life? From paycheck to paycheck without the extras others have? And YES these people worked hard to!!!!! I am a believer if I don't have the cash in hand I can't afford to take out a loan to buy it as in reality look at where the people are that did. (with so called job security)

The bail out money has notta to do with paying the way for laid off workers, IMO. It is so as stated to build over seas at our expense Get a clue read between the lines. GM employees are history as far as the corporation is concerned and my heart goes out to them and all in our area affected by the Economy, Don't get me wrong but hey more then GM workers lost their jobs and more are getting laid off due to the economy. it is not just Janesville it is nation wide, IMO complaining and blaming isn't doing anything and people need to look to what can be done to bring back what we lost even if it means a less wage and living a little more conservative like most people do. In a way this has brought out a hard lesson to those that believed they had a secure job. I applaud those workers that are doing something with their loss (schooling, and taking a risk at learning other skills) It is hard after 20 or more years to do this. And the bashing of the hard workers needs to end and a little more compassion shown as no ones job is secure. Just read day after day and think the next lay off may be you.

In october, GM's outstanding shares were worth 4 billion dollars which is what they call MKT CAP. They hadn't seen that level since 1929. Today the MKT CAP is only 1.26 billion. To put it bluntly...gm is in deep dodoo.

Yep, lets give GM more bailout money. They plan on laying off 47,000 more employees and their CEO does't even know how to manage a business. I say let them go bankrupt.
