JANESVILLE—Janesville’s interim school superintendent spoke to her staff Monday through a video posted on the district’s Web site.

Superintendent Karen Schulte said she would make weekly addresses through the “vodcasts.”

In her first video, recorded with the help of Craig High School staff, Schulte noted that the district and the wider community face serious challenges in the months ahead because of the economy, local layoffs and a school budget with a projected shortfall.

Schulte asked staff to help her with ideas for saving money to balance the 2009-10 budget. She also asked staff members to ignore rumors, saying that she would communicate with anyone affected by budget cuts first, and then with the rest of the school community.

Schulte said the governor has not yet let the district know if any money from the federal stimulus package will help the district with its budget problems.

The vodcast can be downloaded here. The vodcast can be found at the lower right side of the Web page.

NVgrf: I always thought you were a class act and awesome teacher and man. Your most recent post, however, leaves a lot to be desired. Dare I say that I am now glad you are retired so not to poison young minds with even more rhetoric and mudslinging. Sad when you have to tell a veteran, well-respected educated to grow up!! I thought "badgers" comment provided minimal comic relief at best. And, if for no other reason, soccer and golf wouldn't get motorcoaches because of participation numbers--back when YOU were coaching. Soccer was the "it" sport it now is. A short bus would have provided adequate room back in those days.

AnatPhys: Re-read the first few words of your post.... Where do you teach? Craig? Yeah, wouldn't expect you to know anything about the intricate workings of your cross town rival. I can tell you that those posts were not gross over-generalizations when you see green and gold.

just learned about the vod-cast from someone outside the education community. Also learned that there has not been communication directly with teachers. How sad. She wants to listen and engage the staff, but fails to invite the largest body of district employees. Perhaps no groups received an invitation to view. Not exactly a great start.

PS Samuel Adams, I too, am tired of the scare tactics used EVERY spring by the district to rationalize cuts to staffing and programs. I've sat through quite a few Board meetings and listened as parents and teachers defend the value a particular program. When the announcements come out that the Fund Ten balance is bigger again, we are left puzzled as to how this can be happening so regularly. . . .

Badgerlvr.......Anyone who still has a moniker referring to their college years need not comment. "Ineedanadultlife" might be more appropriate. And with the sad, sad case of Badger athletics, another might be "loserlover". But then, rising to the level of Cub Scout softball coach is not exactly a life success story either. Have a nice day. You need it.

I echo the previous sentiments regarding the choice of interim superintendent. Please, please don't let her do to the district what she did to our family. Bad choice.

Most of the Varsity teams use school buses. In some cases there are only coach buses available. This some times happens when a team needs to be moved and it is during school release time the coach maybe a stop-drop-return and the team returns in a school bus. If the team is going a far distance it is just logical to take a coach, for instance Parker Swim to the Manitowoc Invite. These boys have done that trip on a school bus. Shouldn't our teams ride in style if they are going to a State Tournament.

The item in this article that should be challenged is the budget shortfall. How long is the school board going to let the wool be pulled over their eyes?
*
For the last 5 years every Feb. and March the ESC staff say we need to cut millions to balance the budget. Then in June it turns out the district has anywhere from a $700,000 to $4 MILLION dollar surplus. Why does the school board accept such mismanagement of funds? They are either completely inadequate at their jobs, or using "fuzzy" math.
*
Why do taxpayers let the ESC staff threaten to cut good vital programs? Why does the JEA let them threaten them? Why doesn't the Gazette do a story on these threats by the ESC staff that do real harm to our district, yet have not proven to be true in years?

I coach two sports at Craig. To say "most all the Varsity teams take coach buses" is NOT true. On occasion, if the bus company does not have a yellow bus available, they will send a coach bus at no extra charge. While this is a pleasant surprise, it is certainly not "the norm" for most teams. Also, I know of cases where a booster club has paid the extra amount for a coach bus for a special trip (state tournament series, for example). Just because a coach bus pulls up, do not assume that the school district is footing the bill. Also - one poster leads you to believe that Varsity teams always ride on their own bus. This is not usually the case. In both of my sports, JV and Varsity share one bus. As a teacher and coach, it is frustrating to see people make generalizations about the schools and jump to conclusions about athletics based on misinformation. While there may be a shred of truth somewhere in your statements (I can not speak for all teams everywhere), I do not want the community to assume that we are spending tax dollars on items which we are not.

ihavealife, DECA is not funded through School District funds. If DECA took a coach, it is because the students did fundraising to pay for it or because it may have been the only option at the time. Often, DECA trips will not be back by a certain time, and the school buses need to be used for the routes at the end of the day. Please don't think and discuss that the district is paying for DECA expenses. All registrations, travel, etc., come from either fundraising or are paid for by the student.

NVgrf--Why in the world would the BOE grant a coach bus for the "golf team"? As for soccer, you've got to win a game now and then. :-)

ihavealife....I was a varsity high school head coach for 30+ years in Janesville, and can't remember more than once taking a coach bus for out of town games / matches. What sports are pulling this one off?

Who in their right mind nominated karen schulted for interim superintendent? Speaking as a former student, I was a victim of her narrow mindedness and inability to compromise. I hope she is not the best janesville has to offer for this position at this trying time.
Let's find a new superintendent so our kids have a chance.

Schulte as superintendent, even if only temporary, is a scary thought.
